Problem With MXT

I have a MXT that I have had for over a year. Now when I turn it on for the first 20 minutes or so it works fine. After that it starts going berserk and becomes unusable. Sometimes I can use it for longer periods without any trouble. I thought the ground balance was not working properly, but I tried Monte's tip to lock the ground balance and same thing. I've also pretty much ruled out outside interference, out in fields far away from power lines and such. I'm afraid its going to have to make a trip back to Whites. Anyone had similar trouble or any advice before I send it in?

<STRONG>Steve,
You didn't mention battery condition. Did you try fresh batteries? Also, when it goes "berserk", you might try removing the batteries while it's doing it. Wait a couple of minutes, and then replace the batteries. Don't know if that will work, just an idea.
Good hunting,

I have tried taking the battery pack out and then reinstalling it, to reboot. That didn't help. My batteries read 11 volts and truthfully I can't remember if these are fresh batteries since the problem started or not. Guess I'll try a new set so I can rule out one bad battery. Must be something that comes on once the electronics are on for a while and batteries would certainly do that.

Also, make sure you're on ground you've worked before and know to be reasonably mild and clear of targets. That's about the only other things I can think of to troubleshoot before sending her back.

Having worked on electronics for a long time, it sounds to me as though you have a thermal problem with one of the surface mount chips. What this means is that as you use the MXT, the chip will see an increase in temparature. The chip, when it heats up, expands, and causes loads of problems. Other components an do this as well, but most likely it will be a chip. Temparature increases in electronics is common. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
I say send it back and see what White's says.
Good luck and HH.

Neal, I think you may have the culprit. It definitely seems to be something that is related to temperature. It does seem to run correctly for longer periods of time when its warm out than when I was using it in the 40s out. When it was cold out I could use it for about 20 minutes and then it just went nuts and was completely unusable. Now that its warmer out I can use it for probably 40 minutes and then it becomes very erratic, but still works. I'm ready to call White's and see about sending it in. Thanks a million, Steve
