Hello,
I have been running the gain at factory setting of 10.
The reason for the "offset", I am very new to metal detecting (only a few weeks now, but im hooked). So I figure the only way to learn was to try new things instead of being afraid of the buttons. So when I was getting to much chirping and unstable beeps. I didnt want to keep loosing my gain (depth) so I just experimented with the offset and it got quiet. Was that not a smart move?
As for the jetty. They are rocks of all sizes. From 12" to a few feet large. Because of the beach renourishment about two years ago, these jetty only rise above the beach by 12" to 24".
Thankyou Marshall
I will try a test coin as well, good idea Jerry

Hello again FERD......and thank you for your reply.
I am impressed ........I still wonder why you added a positive off-set to your ground balance.....by that I wasn't meaning to be critical (in case my previous post may have read that way) but rather I was very curious about your reasoning, and what caused you to decide to do that.
Whatever your line of thought, it was a sensible thing to do.....Smart move?....indeed it was, especially if you are new to the hobby!
Normally, one adds a positive off-set to normal tracking, to mask the effects of 'hot-rocks' causing spurious responses.
I have no way of knowing what the VDI's were that accompanied your spurious responses......Where they '95'ers...or some such high numbers?
Or where they low 2's or 3's ?
95'ers are generated when the detector can't properly classify the causes, but the detector doesn't clearly see them as ferrous targets.
95'ers can indeed be ferrous.....wet rusty iron is typical...often deep.
Big iron targets or mis-shapen iron are other culprits......Put anything like those in wet sand or deep in soil.....then you have problems.
In your case...around a jetty...well it's any body's guess as to the cause.
Don't be too reluctant to reduce your sensitivities in times of difficulties......
How about experimenting in that situation by first obtaining your beach GB as per normal.....then switching auto-trac OFF. (locking the GB point)
Then add your positive off-set whilst swinging over the noisy spot, to hear if you can quieten down the erratics caused by whatever is responsible?
Even come down a few points in gain or sensitivity.
Remember, your the boss in control, and we are only 'armchair advisers'.
If you are using the Salt program....then switching WRAP off may be a good move.
Also REJECT +95.
Here's hoping you make some nice beach finds......I'll keep a look-out for your progress...........Matt....The Marshall
