Problem with a Sov Elite (long)

Did you do any research on the Sovereign Elite before you bought it?? The reason I ask is because this is the way the Sovereigns work and why many of us like them. The threshold tones change to that of the last target and will keep this tone until it sees a different target. The volume changes as you go over the target, but once over the volume of the target will go down, but the tone stays until the next target. Now this low tone growl or buzzing is caused when you go over iron or a disc target at it will null then come back with a real low tone of iron which to me sounds like a low growl or a buzzing as you say. This is the tone most hear most of the time, I know I do 90%or more of the time.
Now when calibrating the meter you are using a quarter or dime as either will be the highest tone or reading you will get on the meter. Start swinging the coil over the target and try to just go over the target back and forth to keep the tone as constant as you can and this is where you should be able to adjust it to 550 on the meter. If you are as far as you can go and still not 550 you may have a bad connection or the meter may need to be opened up to have the coarse calibration set. Being you bought it used I would ask the person you got it from to see if he noticed the meter doing this.
Now when hunting with it you will have to go slower then any other detector and when you hear a good tone you have to do what we call the Sovereign wiggle to get the tone as steady as you can and for the meter to read as high as it also can. The Sovereign wiggle is swinging the coil over just the target area to keep the tones as constant as you can, maybe it is just a half inch or so, but it looks like you are wiggling the coil.

When the battery goes low you will get a signal when nothing is there, it is actually a high tone blip that will come once, then about 10 seconds latter again, then about 5 seconds again and then just a louder threshold you can not turn down. This mean the battery need recharging. Also I will mention that the alkaline pack can not be used for 8 rechargeable batteries either as it need a full 12 volt to run the Sovereigns as 8 alkaline will give you 12 volts, but 8 rechargeable will only give you 9.6 volts as they are 1.2 volts apiece where as alkalines are 1.5 volts. The factory pack has 10 rechargeable cells in it.

I gave you a few tips and I know you will have more questions as you go so be sure to ask as we have many here on this forum to help you as we all were new to the Sovereigns at one time also.

Hi Don,

It takes some time with the Sovereigns and some don't have the patience for them too and give up, but those that spend the time to learn them will tell you this detectors are some of the best there is.
The first while I know I wanted to get rid of mine ,but after i got to know it I find many of the area we had thought was cleaned out where like virgin again, only with older and deeper finds plus we can tell the trash much better too.

Good Luck and I too used to have a GTA 1000 Power-master and found it to be the best Garrett i have ever used, tried the GTI 2000, the 1500 and the 2500 plus the 1250 and still think the 1000 was the better one for me and my coin hunting.

All of the Minelab BBS type detectors (Sovereign and Excaliburs) change threshold tone as you go over different targets. They will make a null sound if going over a iron target then return to a low tone. It takes a bit of getting use to if you have ever used say a 3 tone detector or a single tone detector. On the plus side you will know by listening to the tones closely what you are digging. Since they ignore iron you don't really have to worry about digging nails and small iron. Some people like sovereigns others hate them. Personally I think they are great. I have used about every detector made and have detected since 1974. Hope this long post helped you understand the sovereign alittle better.

Merry Christmas & HH :detecting:
