Problem solved I think.:clapping:

I really believed that all three of my battery packs couldn't all be bad at the same time and then I thought well maybe the contact springs inside the handle where the battery packs slide into might be weak, lose or corroded so I put a a little wedge between my battery pack and the rubber door on the handle. Went out to a couple of parks for about four hours today and my borrowed XS worked find with no problems. As I told you fellows on my other earlier post, my XS is at MInelab being worked on and now I'm wondering if the spring contacts on my XS were weak also. Guess I'll find out pretty soon, but kind of glad that I think I found the problem on my buddies XS. HH.

I hope that's the problem too, Eddie. Those spring do get soft and lose their tension after years of use. Although, I'm trying to figure out if the machine is already off, how can it turn itself on by just making contact with the battery terminals?

I'm thinking that maybe the power button could be bad, but then again if the battery contacts inside the handle were the real problem I can see why my borrowed XS may have come on by itself. When it shut off it may have just been in limbo because of a bad connection and for some strange reason it made contact again causing it to come on when in actuality it was never off in the first place, but just a temporary bad connection. What do you think Dan?

You can probably test that out on your friend's XS. Just leave the machine on, and then take the battery pack out.....then put the battery pack back in and see it the machine will turn back on without having to push the "power" button.

Let me know...

That's nice to know - maybe removing the battery pack while in storage would keep the springs from wearing out too fast? I normally remove the battery pack in between hunts.

Dang! If he has a working detector...there goes the neighborhood! jim

hello, you can check spring condition, buy splicing top of the handle, just unscrew few top screws.

That's a good idea removing the battery pack if not in use. I detect pretty much all year round and leaving the battery packs in all the time can probably take a toll on the spring contacts inside the handle making them lose their tension. Have one on me.:drinking:

Good idea Dan, but it didn't work. Funny how you try and duplicate a problem and it never works. Kind of like having a tooth ache and when you go to the dentist office your tooth ache goes away. I'm pretty sure now that my main problem on my borrowed XS is that the spring contacts inside the handle are weak and corroded a little bit. I wouldn't be surprised with my XS that I sent into Minelab for repair is experiencing the same problem, but it could be something else and hopefully on their workbench they can figure it out and duplicate the problems that I was having out in the field. HH.

I have the same issue with my SE Eddie. The rechargeable packs work fine but the regular battery packs seem to short out and my machine shuts off or glitches.

Sorry to hear about you having similar problems, but glad to know that it could be just the battery pack. I tried to order another battery pack from several places, but seems like those and other Minelab parts are on back order. I wonder what the problem is with getting parts now? They got to hire some more repair guys at their place in Vegas if they are telling us they have a 30 working day period for turn around on repairs. Seems kind of long, but like I said they probably need more repair people working on our machines. I have mentioned to them that it could just be a battery pack problem hoping they might expedite my XS, but at the same time I want to make sure they check it out real good and make sure there isn't something else going on. HH.

Eddie,

I will be answering your P.M. soon as I didnt forget, and think I may have a new alkaline pack in stock and will check it out and get back to you. Besides the spring I would check and clean the contact on the end of the battery packs themselfs as most of these build up a slight film and can give good contact problems.
