PROBLEM EXCALIBUR ?

New member
HI....Just bought a S/H Excal' 1000 (Blue) the previous owner just got it back from Minelab after a service and had used it for a couple of months.
Something appears to be wrong with it why I don't know ? Used it for the first time on the beach yesterday and it was very erratic sounding off all over the place, even in free air.
Only did 15 mins with it and then packed it away.
It emits spurious signals what ever the settings, a wee bit more stable in pinpoint....Also the sensitivity does not ''click'' into auto ?
Maybe its me ? what are the settings recommended for wet/dry beach hunting.
Any help would be appreciated.

i also bought a used one.. i have somewhat minimal experience with it, but a few things that come to mind are--- 1. are you using it near overhead power lines .... if so it could be EMI interferance... 2. you mentioned that the sensetivity dial does not click into auto.... the symtoms you described make it sound like the sensetivity might be set way too high... you also said it does not click into auto..... ? when you turn the sensetivity dial thru full range does it turn three quarters turn or does it just keep turning... may be something wrong with sensetivity potentiometer... my sensetivity dial rotates three quarters turn thru full cycle.. is there any difference between allmetal and disc... try it out at a couple different places using different settings see if that makes a difference... beyond that i dont know what to tell ya... somebody with more knowledge will probably chime in... good luck...

Thanks for that ......checked the sensitivity again and guess what... it does click very quitely and you dont feel it in your finger tips like the Sovereign but it clicks !!
It has a rotation that stops where the yellow marker stops so i assume thats ok...but it stil falses in auto...so back to square one !!

Forget Auto and just set Sens at about 1 o'clock. Disc mode, volume full, threshold max disc 0/1 If you have problems with that set up you have a bad machine and it needs to go back to Minelab. Make sure that the knobs are not spinning on the shaft, that your battery has a full charge and the plug is snug

Like Erikk says the battery connection needs to be snug (not cranked)and not wet or dirty. Ans by all means charge the battery.

Like erikk said if that set-up don't work send it in. The falsing may just be nulling when your coil goes over an iron object. The threshold will change tunes also. That's an Excal thing. Don't swing your coil too fast. Set it like erikk suggested and you should be fine. HH :minelab:

try some other beach my xcal2 when put the coil in the air it goes crazy too but i live not too far from an air port ..most i can go with the sens. its little more than half

Thanks to all....I will try those settings..erikk .but with threshold at max wont it blow your ears off ?...The battery is ok reading 13.2 volts and tight and clean.knobs are ok....here goes !!
Oh ..whats wrong with the sensitvity being in auto ?.... as the manual advises !

Early AM TWO MANY MAXES!!!! Sorry Threshold at just a low BZZZZZZZZ] You want to keep it where you can control the Sens and at 1 o;clock it should purrrr if not back to Minelab

That is a bummer but once you get it fixed you will be happy. I like my Blue HP excal better than the Yellow 1000 or the New excal 2 Do a Peltor mod on the head phones and you will be a happy camper (wouldn't hurt to throw a WOT coil on it either)

Can you advise on the headphones errik.. Peltor ? and can I fix a WOT coil on myself .What about the waterproofing etc

There is a post on the mod here somewhere but I am sure OBN will shoot you a video:clapping: It is very simple and will take about 15 minutes to get it finished As for the WOT if you can solder you can install the Coiltek waterproof connector (instructions are on the website as to wire connections) that way you can switch coils
