Probing the sand ??

On the beach..Has anyone used a metal probe on the wet low tide sand to help find the bottom substrate ( hard shells ),,to help be within reach to locate rings or chains ?,

I made a probe with 5/16" round rod, 4 ' long, marked it at 12", 18", 24", 30" and 3', installed wooden handle, at our beach it will go past 24" easily so I don't even bother to hunt...

Good idea John, I fiqure if the probe goes past hunting depth, not worth hunting it. It seems you have a better percentage of finding the gold rings if you are within the capabilty of your detector;s depth. I might make something for myself. Where did you get the round rod ?...HH Tim

Rebar would be strong & I have seen some rubber coated.

Harbor Freight 2- 24" long screwdrivers with handles CHEAP gets you down there. Great for park/relic detecting too as no bended knee just a poke a poke and ez to id -John

That's the way to do it.

Welding rod will work. Just watch the thickness.

Hi
Such devices (only long ones) use the search engine military theme
For the beach is enough 1m, to find a hard substrate or a stone bottom.
