Probe purchase conundrum

Hi all...

I've been thinking about getting myself a probe for Xmas. I have both a Minelab Explorer II and X-Terra 70. I would love to get a Sunray X-1 probe but I like my X-Terra 70 too much to dedicate a probe for the Explorer.

That leaves me with several other possibilities...

Vibraprobe 560 - I had one and liked it but water somehow got in the battery compartment and stopped working predictably. Must've leaked into the electronics. In process of tearing it apart to see if I can salvage it.

Detector Pro Pocket Uniprobe - Love the look of this one but the absence of a non-audio output ie vibration or light kind of puts me off. Besides, we all wear headphones so why couldn't it have a headphone plug passthru like the Detector Pro Uniprobe Headphones.

Detector Pro Uniprobe Headphones - Look useful and I like the fact that it has the passthru and can become a detector like the Pocket Uniprobe. However, I live in a tropical environment and they look heavy and bulky. Not that I don't mind a bit of sweat but...oh I do like the underwater black ones but they don't have the passthru.

Any other ideas? The odds right now are on getting another Vibraprobe 560 since I could buy 3 of them for every Uniprobe.

thanks...Brissietex

I've owned VibraProbes, Merlins, TinyTecs and SunRay dedicated probes. I've built several of the "homemade" probes as well. Of those, the SunRay probes were the best without a doubt. The performance was three times the others. The problem is I don't use just one brand of detector, nor one model within a brand. I can't see tying up many hundreds of dollars just in probes for each. That's why I bit the bullet and got the Pocket Uni-Probe. I can use it with all my machines, and the performance is on a par with the SunRay probes. The only thing it lacks is operating in the mode the detector is in. Quite frankly, after I've decided to dig, I am going to remove the target and don't need the probe to discriminate. My only gripe is also the lack of a headphone pass-through. That's not a deal killer though as there is a 1/8" headphone jack that works great with a little earbud. I cut one side off of some inexpensive ear buds, and place the other under my headphone cup. Works great.

Good luck with you decision.

Good hunting,

I've used one ever since the Bullseye 2 came out and have had no problems with it.Its not water proof, but is thin, which fits comfortably in the back pocket. It will detect out to at least 2 ins.,and uses a single 9v battery.I've changed the battery once in all the time that I've had it. HH Bob

These are the best probe I have ever used on detectors Sun Ray don't make probes for or if you have several different detector to use. I have one with the headphones built in and they are a great set of headphones to use on all my detectors that don't have a SunRay probe for, depth is better than anything you will find out there.
If you could use the full ear cups headphones than the Uniprobe with the built in headphone would be the cats meow.

I'm really thinking about the Uniprobe headphones. Still not sure how they'd do with the heat here in Australia. I use a lighter pair of headphones to keep from getting too warm. May have to check out a pair when I am in the States next week.
