Probe for Excalibur

MajaPalra

New member
Greetings,

I've owned a Quattro for two years and just love it ... but ...
I keep eyeing the water and am thinking of an Excalibur.
I really enjoy the Sunray X-1 probe on my Quattro and am wondering
what folks are using for the Excalibur. Preferences/recommendations
appreciated.

Maja

The Excalibur pinpoints so easily you'll never need a probe.

Hmmm, well, when I'm in the dry sand on my knees digging
with my hand-held sand scoop, yea, I'd like to have a probe
in my hand -- maybe it's just me.

If your target is 5' deep in the water, do you think a X1 type probe would help? Would it work in moderate to rough surf?

My suggestion is a large mouth 48" handle scoop for the water and a lightweight shorter handled scoop for dry sand.

One of the things I like about dry sand and water detecting is not having to bend over to dig. No pinpointer needed here so far.

Well, since you asked ... let me say this again:
"when I'm in the dry sand on my knees digging
with my hand-held sand scoop, yea, I'd like to have
a probe in my hand." I assume I'm not the only
MDer who would dare admit to wanting to use an Ex
on the dry sand, or, God forbid, maybe even try it
in the dirt? *ducking for cover* You know -- use
it as a multi-purpose MD? With that in mind,
not meaning to step on anyone's toes,I asked a simple
question regarding probes. Well, it was supposed
to be a SQ.

I guess most beach hunters don't use pinpointers. In the dry sand; I use my foot to scrape sand a little bit at a time until I'm down about 6" to 8". If that don't do it, I use a scoop with a 36" handle. Only stuff I have trouble finding this way is foil; foot not sensitive enough for that. I'm not interested in foil anyway.

I use an Automax V4 pinpointer and have found that the closer to the surfline I go, the more unstable and eratic the pinpointer becomes..How close to the surfline have you used your probe? Larry (The Palm Bay Pirate)

Well, I agree that you wouldn't need one in the water because you are using a scoop, but it sure would be nice elsewhere. I've been trying my Excal at inland locatons and I would love a probe like the DX-1 on my DFX. It's much harder to judge the depth with the Excal inland than it is with the DFX so a probe of some type would be nice. Of course if it was similar to a Sunray probe you would then have to deal with having waterpoof connections.

I didn't notice the dry sand only part. I apologize!

Even in the dry sand though, I prefer the scoop and I'm kind of a pinpointing probe fanatic. I own the Periscope, Uniprobe, Sunray probe and various others. But for the beach, in or out of the water I recommend the scoop.
