What is up with these "ferrite" filters that are supposed to cut EMI RFI interference? Is it a valid item? Anyone?

not sure whether they would work or not... just assuming they would not if the search coil cable is shielded.. that's what the shielding is for.. maybe some one here has used one and can comment on them..

I have found they do not do much...You need to make at least 2 loops around it though, not just put it over the cable.

HH,

some old satellite receivers have them on the inside of the case on the power cord.
just thinking out loud.... the wire for the search coil should be shielded... if so... the interference would not be able to affect the wires inside the cable... the only part of the search coil that would be subject to interference would be the windings inside the coil itself. Then the only way to eliminate it the would be the use of bandwidth filters in the oscillation circuits in the transmit/receive portion of the detector's circuitry or add on filters in series with the search coil...JMHO...

You can get them at Ham Radio Outlet...for that matter maybe at Radio Shack.....I don't think they do much for my Ham Radio's don't really know if they will or be or are of any benefit to any metal detector. They do little if nothing for the power cord on my XM receiver. jmho :goodnight:
