Probably going to get rid of the MX5

As a lot of people know I like to try different detectors when they come out. So I buy, sell and trade a lot. I wanted to try the MX5 so I got one. I took it out for a couple hours today to do some testing. I was able to hit an 8" quarter that I buried for a test with a proper ID and good repeatable signal. But I can already tell it just isn't my cup of tea as they say. I really like all the features but I just don't really care for how it hits (audio) on low conductors like nickels. It could be a bit more accurate on the low conductor side too but for the price it is not bad. So I probably won't do any more videos with it. Sorry.

Lol your spoiled. Brain of an etrac ;). I understand. The v3i wasnt for me but i do love the mxt models. I still look forward to seeing your vids.

Thanks for the info Bill! I know what I need to on the MX5.:stretcher:
I'll keep looking for something else for my 14 yo grandson.

With me i tend too do the initial homework on a new detector but will never buy one that has only just come out,the main reason just incase of any reliabilty problems that can happen with new detectors.

If i fancy a new detector and its passed my initial citeria of what i am looking for and my style of detecting then i will finally hit the buy button, but then i will keep a detector for years and years and learn everything about it.

I still use my DFX and still learning after nearly 8 years, also the same with my T2 albeit i have only had that 3 years but still learning.

Good luck with your next new detector and Happy Hunting

Wow did not see this coming. I wish you could expand on your dislikes, but understand if have decided to part with it. Sorry to hear it did not meet your expectations, and appreciate your candor.

Thanks for the videos Bill,

The saturated audio is kinda annoying, but I wonder about the two tone or all metal modes. I love the seven tones on my SST but they are Vco. and the transition to the deeper all metal channel is smooth. No crackling!!
For me not having a track lock is its main downfall. As good as Whites tracking is I still want to lock it for small jewelry.

Being a new offering and that it has different audio than the MXT, M6 I have to wonder if the electronics have been upgraded I.E faster chip better amp? Maybe ????
Any way I'm glad its not just another MXT minus features it seems different enough to justify its creation.

I've had a lot of detectors and have found first impressions on a detector can be misleading. There are a lot of sleepers out there and the MX5,could be one of these detectors.LOL how many users boxed up an Explorer after a quick air test.IMHO the MX5 should be used a month or two at different locations in the field not a coin garden or air test to find the Pros and Cons.Good Luck Ron

The MX5 has a lot of features for a detector in its price range. It may be one of the best actually. For the type of hunting I do I knew after using it a couple hours in the parks that it probably would not work for me. If I was a relic type hunter or even hunting in less trashy areas it probably would work great. I agree a person should learn the detector they are going to use. I can not see spending two months and a ton of hours trying to learn something that was not going to work out for me anyway. The MX5 will probably make a lot of people happy.

I think I have some video from a hunt I may try to get posted pretty soon.

Bill, I'm not sure how the MX5 would work as a relic detector. This detector ID targets well and a has a quick response, separation is good and could improve with a small coil. There are a lot of after market coils for this unit.I think Whites has a good product with this detector and it is very much suitable for parks.Good Luck Ron

Bill sorry to hear the MX5 didn't work well for what you wanted. I have watched several of your vids and love them. In your opinion what is a great all around deep coin detector in or near that price range.

I don't think in the price range you will find a detector with as many features as the MX5. It goes go plenty deep too. It kind of just depends on what type of hunting you do.

Its probably hard to go from Whites flag ship machine to their mid range detector.
There is a world of difference between the V3i and MXT.

It can be hard to make a defining statement about a detector that basically works well and has good features if it just doesn't fit. I've been considering trading up from a 6T which is fairly similar due to the fact that on the MX5 I can use my MXT coils, but haven't been in a hurry to sell or trade until the worst of winter is over.

I just picked up an MX5 yesterday. Have not been able to actually hunt with it yet.The weather won't cooperate. I like certain detectors for two main reasons.I have to like the way they feel and like the way they sound. Been detecting 38 years. Have owned about 40 or 50 detectors.I own several now. When I first tried the Explorer XS a friend had I hated it.The sound I thought was terrible. And It felt like a ton in weight. Later I bought one and got used to the sound and weight. I have had a Safari and an Etrac. I like the Etrac but where I hunt I felt I was rabbit hunting with an elephant gun.So I sold it. Now at 81 years old I need something light.. I am amazed at the fact that people are constantly comparing the Garrett AT pro and now the MX5 to the Etrac. At three times the price the Erac should be three times better than either one.So I believe not just for the money, The AT Pro and the MX5 must be very good detectors to be compared with the Etrac.,,Just my 2 cents....Jack

They both have a ton of features packed into a light weight package. I also admire you for swinging the coil at 81 years young! :super:
