Pro Pointer question

Went hunting in East Tn this weekend on a pasture called Government Hill. Heard rumors that an old Civil War campsite was supposed to be there. Didnt find a thing. Anyway, my question is, as i was checking the holes with the pro pointer i noticed the soil was driving it crazy. I could pick up a handfull of dirt and lay the pro pointer on it and it would sound off. This didnt happen on every hole. I was chasing ghosts for awhile till i realized what was happening. AT Pro would ground balance around 70. Anybody know whats in the dirt? It was a rich dark reddish color but not clay like. Heavy in minerals i suppose....kinda made the propointer useless.

Did you start it up by first having it away from anything like the ground or metal? I see users sticking it near or in the hole while turning it on - that's not the way to do it. Did you have a ring on and holding it towards the middle or closer to the tip? Did you try a new battery?

I always start it up holding it away from everything. No ring. It worked fine most of the day. I would hold a fistful of dirt in my hand and touch the pro pointer to it and get nothing. But wrap my hand lightly around the pro pointer with the dirt and it would sound off. It would sound off while checking the edges inside the parameter of the hole too. It would even increase and decrease in intencity as I moved it around like it was locating a target. But no target.. I've used it in the yard since and was unable to duplicate the same thing. Worked just fine. Hmmmm

It sounds like the auto tune is adjusting itself too sensitive? It probably picks up a coin better than 2 inches in an air test? How far away will it pick up a clad dime off the tip holding the coin flat?

I did the dime test. It starts to chirp right at 1 3/4 inches. Thanks for the replies guys.

Air test sound normal. Been taking too many iron pills? lol Scratching my head now - OK. Try it in another area in the field. If the same results then send it in.

What color is your dirt??? Black, Sandy, Red, Gray??? You may have high iron content in your soil or as suggested, the circuits could be out of tune...

HH,

Its a real rich looking soil, no clay but reddish in color. It is a cow pasture though. I wonder what they're feeding them.

High Iron diet...keeps em on the ground...You know they fart for a reason...If they did not, they would float away...lol

HH,

In these areas you can try to detune the ground out.. Put the end of the pointer to the ground then turn it on. Then probe the hole and see if the ground mineral is tuned out?

GoGogopher your crackin' me up:rofl:
