Pro Pointer question

I recently visited some family in southern Missouri, and I got my uncle started metal detecting. He ordered an Ace 250 to start with, and I left my Pro Pointer with him so one of my younger cousins could help. I ordered a new Pro Pointer about two months ago (thanks Dan at Kellyco for a great deal.) It seems that I may have gotten a faulty pinpointer. After I turn it on and scan a hole, I'll usually lay it off to the side and out of the way. Over the last few weeks I been having a problem with it just starting to sound off for no reason. If I turn it off and then turn it back on, it will usually be okay for a little while. But then I'll scan a hole and it will start going off all over the place, even with no metal around. It seems to do this very randomly, not every single time I use it. I changed out batteries to another one I had, and still it did the same thing. I made a point to buy new batteries the other day, just to make sure the battery wasn't the problem. It apparently wasn't the problem because it did the same thing with a brand new battery. Has anyone else had this same problem? I'm guessing I'll have to send it in for an exchange.

I turn mine off after I scan the hole each time just to make sure there's no cross-talk between the detector and the Propointer. If it only does it after it's on for a while and your detector is in the proximity, that may be the problem. Make sure your coil is pointed away from you when you use your Propointer. If it goes coo-coo when you first turn it on with good batteries and your detector off, then it should go back to the Garrett Hospital!!

It seems to have some sort of automatic drift over time. My guess is that it is a reminder that it was left turned on.

Huskerfan72 YES!!! my Garrett Pro Pointer Did the same drift thing to me, I sent it in to Garrett and thy traded it with a New one no more Problem,
Iv had this new one 4R a year its good to go, Mickfin

If the IS no metal around when you lay it down and its NOWHERE near your detector
then you might want to have Garrett check it out for you. I always turn mine off as well
when not using it.

I don't know what I'd do without that gadget; it's priceless!

thanks for the advice. Looks like I'll probably be sending it in. What kills me is that I've probably thrown away three perfectly good batteries because I though they were dead.
