Had very little time last night to get out and hunt. Decided upon a farmhouse that has been very stingy. Lots of history here, but has been changed a lot and/or pounded. Decided upon a tree line very close to the road. I figure ppl wouldn't like hunting there b/se of that. Sure enough, 4 inches down at the base of a tree out pops a beauty:

I have been very impressed with the AT Pro so far. About the only thing I haven't found is gold. But, honestly, I haven't been hunting hard for gold yet. yet.

I guess that coin was 100% copper when minted. That's some nice detail on the face .

[size=large]my red book for 2010 says it could have been worth $500.00. don't know if the hole affects that or not.thats thats giving it a ef-40 rating. very sharp coin. very nice find.

Nice find... the Large Cent is one of the coins that continue to elude me.. of course I'm in Oklahoma so I'm not holding my breath.. Congrats!

I read somewhere, I think it was one of these forums, that the hole was for sewing the coin into a pocket lining or coat lining. I don't think pockets were very trustworthy back then.

I've also heard that a penny was nailed to the foundation of an early settler's home for good luck. I've found them with a square nail hole, which supports that possible explanation for the hole.

Don't be bummed about the hole, it adds character to the coin.

Absolutely beautiful find, congrats!
