PRIZM V

I purchased a Prizm V on ebay. Metal detecting is something I have alway had an interest in since being a youngster. Now close to retirement, I want to get a jump start on a hobby. I was told that the detector still had warranty until March of 2007. I am afraid I may be asking some stupid questions because I am a total rookie at this. Does the Prizm V have sound without using headphones? When using the P/P, should the sound get louder as it gets closer to the object? I have tried getting information from the "Owner's Guide" but I can't find the answer. Also does anyone know of a metal detecting club in/near the upstate area of South Carolina? Should the "SENS" be turned down low? I hope someone can provide some answers to me. I thank you so much for any help you can give me.

Does the Prizm V have sound without using headphones? Yes the prizm has sound without the headphones.
When using the P/P, should the sound get louder as it gets closer to the object? The sound will get louder when the object nears the center of the coil only if you have the multi tone turned on.
Also does anyone know of a metal detecting club in/near the upstate area of South Carolina? Check the Internet for detector clubs in Carolina, or you might want to ask your local dealer, check the phone book.
Should the "SENS" be turned down low? No you want the sensitivity as high as you can get it without making the detector unstable.
If your detector is not making sound without the headphones you have a problem. You may need to call Whites and find out how much warranty is left on the unit and get it fixed. My prizm v did quit making sounds and I had to send it in to Whites and within 10 days had it back working perfectly and it did not cost me anything for the repair as mine did have warranty left.
Well good luck and Happy Hunting, Ralph

Thank you so much for your help Ralph! I really appreciate it. As you surmised my Prizm V makes no sound at all unless I use the headphones and even then it is very faint even with the headphone volume turned all the way up. Also when I use the P/P with the multi-tone on, all I get is a steady static-like sound. I will contact Whites as you suggested. The salesperson at my local dealer did not know of any clubs locally. In fact he didn't seem to know much of anything about metal detecting. I checked the Internet and found two clubs listed for SC. The closest is about 60 miles away. I have sent them an email though. Again, let me thank you for taking the time to help a novice.

The Prizm series have their own speaker and will respond with either speaker or headphone sound. However, in the standard motion discriminate mode they are silent search so ... No, you will not hear a sound until you sweep the coil over a target.

In the PinPoint mode you should hear an audio hum. This assists with pinpointing a target and .... Yes, as the coil nears a target in the PP mode, the audio will increase until the target is in-line wit the center of the coil (generally speaking, of course).

Enjoy your new-to-you detector and welcome to a great hobby!

It is possible that someone has accidently bent the inner contacts for the headpgones. If so, you might not hear anything from a speaker, and/or you might have poor headphone sound (none, weak audio, noisy).

If you suspect a problem, try to locate a local dealer or detectorist who can check your unit out for you personally.

Thanks for the tip. I am trying to find someone local, who knows what they are doing, to try this MD and let me know if I am making rookie errors or if there really is a problem. What you have said may be the problem. Because without the headphones the detector is silent when over target or not and is extremely faint even with the headphones. Thanks again!

No problem Ron. This sounds like the same problem I had with mine. I was out detecting and it was working fine and then just quit responding and as you said was faint even with the headphones. Call Whites and let them know what problem you are having. The Prizm V has not been out very long. I had mine fixed this past April and they told me it had not been out 2 years yet so yours should still be under warranty. I hope you got a really good deal on the detector. Its buyer beware on Ebay. Like anyplace though there are good sellers and bad sellers.
Happy Hunting Ralph

Ralph I guess time will tell whether or not I got a good buy. I got the detector, carrying case, bullseye pin pointer, owner's manual and video for less than $480.00 (that included shipping). Tonight when I get home I'll check the serial number and give Whites a call to determine warranty status. The ebay seller told me the warranty was good through March 2007. Even if it is out of warranty, I still need to get it working correctly. Thank you again for all of your help.
