Prizm III advice anyone??

Woodstock

New member
O.K. I'm picking up a Prizm III and I'd like any and all advice as long as it's good user advice and NOT NEGITIVE! I know there a some of you are out there waiting with baited breath to say something negitive and I really don't want to hear about your problems with this machine. I have had ton's of quality machines and I can find faults with them all and most of it was operator error, and I was the operator so ONLY GOOD USER FRIENDLY ADVICE PLEASE!
Also, I'd like to know the best coil I can use for coinshooting so I can get it in the classifieds. All the good advice you can so I can get the best results when I use it. It's only one of my detectors but I want to get to know it as fast as I can....Don't forget about the coil advice eather! Thanks Everyone! Woodstock

I've been getting to know a Prizm V with good results for the past few weeks so IMO go for the Prizm....

There are only 2 coils you can use, the stock 8" and the 9.5" that comes with the Prizm V. I bought a 8" and have been playing with that, better for junky areas but I don't think as deep.

I'm no expert by far but here's my $0.02...
I find that a slow, like 2 second sweep works well. I'm impressed with the pinpoint function. Don't hang your hat on the ID, I put my 14K wedding band down and it read strongly at the pull tab icon so don't set your disc too high or you'll miss rings (and nickels). You will dig plenty o' :pulltab:'s though :wiggle:. I'm still on my first set of batteries. The depth meter shows a decent approximation, but beware the .50 reading at 4-6"...... typical for a buried can! Dimes read either of the two penny icons. I have yet to hit any silver but assume that they would give stronger signals.

BTW - 64 coins today ( + random trash of course) all modern clad but still a good day with the 8" coil!! I'm happy with my machine and am feeling comfortable with it after only 3-4 times out. Nice and light, turn on and go. Good luck!!!

The 8 inch coil is best for coins and jewelry. You can run your sens higher with the 8 inch coil. The depth is about the same as the 950 coil. PP is dead center. One battery is for the audio and one is for the electronics. So when you get the low battery signal just switch the batteries and you'll get a little more life out of them. You can hunt in the true all metal mode with ID if you lock the PP button on too.

What do you mean by lock the PP button? Is there a PP lock on the machine? I'm waiting to recieve the detector and it's won't be in my hands til friday or saturday. Thanks for the GOOD advise!

I don't have a Prizm but there is a Prizm video on the Whites electronics site. Jimmy Sierra goes through all the controls and shows how to hunt , pin point etc. Rob

P/P stands for Pinpointing which you do in "All Metal Mode" which is a selection on the push-pad. Once you've investigated the target this feature assists you in determining fairly precisely where to dig. So it's not just a blind guess. Definitely follow the advice of rcasio44 and check out the video at www.whiteselectronics.com. From the links across the top of the page, select videos and then Prizms, then the topic and your off! You can watch the entire instructional video (which is actually included with your detector).

I hope this helps!!

Good luck and HH with your new detector when you get it!!!

Andrea

If you push the PP button real quick it will lock on in true all metal. You can hunt this way if you choose but it will pick up everything. It still ID's in the PP all metal mode. I wouldn't hunt this way in the beginning.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. All of it good and indeed I will use it. I was just wondering was ment by locking the pinpoint. Most of the machines I've worked with the pinpoint is on when you press on it and off after you release it. You know, your running in disc find a target that sounds good and then you press the pinpoint to know exactly where it is. But when the pinpoint is released, your back in disc. Are you telling me that if you press the pinpoint fast on a Prizm it'll lock into All Metal and stay in All Metal? I guess this is new to me cause I've never owned a newer Whites...if you all can think of anything else please post more about Prizms.

That's right. Also if you press and hold the PP button on then when you release it it goes back to the disc mode. All you need is a quick push and it locks on. It also says "all metal" on the screen too. If your ready to dig everything in the ground as deep as the detector will go then this is the mode for you.

Great! Thanks for the clarification on the "pinpoint lock" and so if I press and hold the PP button it'll return to disc, correct?
That being said, THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THERE GOOD ADVICE ON THE PRIZM, AND THANKS TO FIND'S FORUM
FOR BEING THERE FOR ALL OF US!
I know in the beginnig of this post that I asked for only "GOOD" advice and that's what you all gave me. And that's what I got.
But it got me thinking that maybe there should be a spot on the forum for all of you that had to hold back on the trash talk.
Find's Forum could call it "TRASH TALK" and then everyone could voice there opinon's when needed. I know there's a review
column and a feedback column but I think a "Trash Talk" column would find a place and neatly fit into find's.
After all, knowone want's to hear about there detector being "JUNK" after spending all they can invest on one. This column
should be for problem solving and advice and not that we should have bought our detector's.
That's my opinion on bad advice and opinions that some (but not all) of the readers give here on Find's Forum.
Again, THANKS EVERYONE and have a GREAT and SAFE holiday! HH, Woodstock

Well you really need to look at the good and the so called "bad" too. But you wanted the good. I don't think if someone doesn't like a product in question they have to post on a separate forum. You know some people can even hype up the good points above what they should be too.

How right you are about that. What I really ment was we only use what we can afford. I have many unit's to use...to many in fact. But needless trashing of someone else's machine is pointless and discouraging and only leads to disappointment to the owner. We are here to encourage others in our wonderful hobby and help them as I would help you and others if needed. All I see when someone trashes anothers machine is show off's that a better off financially and what's to belittle other's not so well off. Like a guy driving a Hummer thinks he's better that a guy in a Geo Metro. They both get to were they're going but the Hummer's guy's butt is cushioned better. But in fact the Metro owner gets to the same place and is richer in his pocket.
That being said, I've never seen a post asking everyone to "Trash" there detector......enuff said. Woodstock

I have read where people "trash" brands. That's not good. But stating some of the lesser points of a detector is OK. I try to keep out of stating many of the lesser points of a detector on their respective forums. But in the general forum is where you will get the most info. Not that I'm rich or anything. But I can afford the higher priced detectors but chose for the low to medium priced units. I find they perform very nice. I have 4 detectors and three of them cost around $200 each. This is just my opinion.

Again you completely correct. I can afford higher priced units but I chose to keep it mid- range also. And the lesser points caneven be in units a grand and over. Like the Explorer, great detector, but heavy as h-ll and you almost have to have a guide with you to learn it. I like detectorreviews for finding out what other people think. But like you said, but not in your words. You have to take the good and the bad with a grain of salt. We both have basicly the same opions but just word our thoughts different.....Thanks!

Woodstock,
We all are looking for metal with metal detectors. That's as simple as it gets! It's a hobby for most. Let's have some fun!
