Pretty darned good coin day!

Yesterday was an exciting day for me with my 705, in fact, for me, an unbelievable one. I dug two coins I have never found, in 20 years of detecting, a Morgan silver dollar(1886) and a liberty seated half dollar(185:geek:. Driving around I spotted a scraped lot across the street from a park that has been in use for over 110 years. A dry cleaners had been demolished and the asphalt parking lot torn out and removed along with quite a bit of surface soil. What I found was a rather large area that was missing about 8" of the top soil. Not a good thing I thought.

I moved to the area in front where the sidewalk had crossed the lot before it was taken up. There was still an indention where it ran, so was easy to follow. On the west side of the sidewalk, about 12" from it's edge, my 705 gave me a strong 44 on the target ID. Up came the half dollar from about 4" down. Add the missing 8" and I figure that coin must have been down around 12" before the dozers hit the lot. I worked my way down the sidewalk area, digging lots of trash, then around 40 feet from where the half was found, got a solid 46 signal. Expecting another vienna sausage lid, up came the silver dollar. I gotta tell you I wasn't even expecting a silver dollar. Looking back to where I dug the half, I was intrigued to discover the two big silvers lay almost in an exact parallel line to the sidewalk bed. I have a feeling the same person lost both coins. I would love to know what happened.

Trash or treat , I cant even imagind finding a morgan that a good find

That an awsome day. Which coil were you running?

Congrats on two excellent finds. And congrats for being "observant" of your surroundings. Those type of places are few and far between. Glad you found two BIG silvers. Now, go back there and dig up those dimes, half dimes and silver three cent pieces! HH Randy

I was using the 6" conccentric coil. I use it 90% of the time. Works arount the trash without losing much depth compared to the stock coil and a whole lot easier to pinpoint with. That of course means less scratched good targets Also light enough to swing all day.

Wow what a day! 3 great finds....

Wow!! Way to go, what a day! A seated half, that's got to be a pretty rare find, and a Morgan to boot, awesome!!!

Yeah Adam, a seated coin is pretty rare in central Oklahoma, not so rare in the eastern part of the state. The area I'm hunting was settled right after the Civil War by several Indian tribes though and opened to white settlement in 1889. I went back again this morning for a couple hours and found an Oklahoma tax token, a wheatie and an 1897 Indian head cent. Working slow and digging any decent sounding signal above iron hoping to find a good button. There is still plenty of area to hunt.

Very nice finds Dan! I'm here in the central Oklahoma area as well and I would love to find coins like that! Got some old coins in a couple of old ghost towns here close, but nothing like that. Excellent job!
