Preserving buttons

What do you put on a button, after cleaning, to preserve it?

Depends on where you found it. If I find it inland in farmers fields....I will give it a water rinse only to leave as much patina as possible but get the crud off it. If I find it in or near salt water....I lightly clean it/rinse with water/let dry/ dip in mineral oil.

If you find a button that most if not all the gilt is still there...I use Aluminum Jelly (BLUE). The large Texas buttons in my pic were treated that way....but they HAVE to have most if not all the gilt on the button. The small Texas button came out of the water just as you see it. Soaked it in fresh water then Mineral oil. Hope this helps.
