Me again,
I found this buckle in the jungle in Panama. The site was the town of Chagres on the Atlantic side. This is where the 49'rs stopped before crossing the isthmus and catching a steamer to the gold fields from the Pacific side.
We found many dimes and half dimes from the 1830's to the 1840's so the buckle is from the same time frame.
Any buckle experts know anything about this one? It's brass plated iron.

Can't recall this exact pattern, but there are a number of fairly similar mid 19th century two-piece (tongue & wreath), "eagle & shield" pattern Militia waist belt plates shown in American Military Belt Plates by O'Donnell & Campbell. You might write to the authors c/o the publisher.
Best of luck
Buckram

I can't find one the same, but the ones that are close all date 1830s, most are a lot more fancy, This may be and artillery buckle, with the wroding eaten away.

Thanks Dean, thanks Buckram. Now I have some idea what it is.

type in "military belt buckle" and see if you can find one like yours. Also, you may want to try Google Search. Wish you luck! Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas)

I didn't think of that. I'll give it a try. Thanks Kelly.

That many sellers on ebay don't know what they have. There are more wrongly IDed or Faked CW items than anything else there. Just a word or warning. But you CAN still use ebay as a tool.

Here is a site with some reproductions of originals. I think it might be the militia 1850 on the link.

It's the tongue portion of a two piece. A rather cheap one which is more uncommon as most were of solid cast brass. Nice find, David @ Dixie
