power lines

I just purchased a new MXT today and tried it out in my yard. I have a high voltage power line next to my yard. How much problem is it going to cause me. Should I find someplace else to practice?

With power lines one never knows for sure, but generally speaking they will usually cause some problems to most detectors. Some times one will be clean ie; no leakage, arcing or dirty insulators but not very often.
The best plan is to stay as far away from them as possible.

You will be able to tell if they are affecting it by the way it runs, if the macine seems to make a lot of chatter and other noise it is being affected. You can lower the gain and it will help. The stock coil is not super bad about power lines as I have them out in my yard and it does fine. But these are not high voltage lines. Basically you have 2 options, lower the gain or get away from the lines, you can still do well with this machine at a lower gain setting.

Like Ray said they may cause some interference in your mxt as far as chatter goes. But if you just turn down your gain and adjust your threshold to a lower edge of sound, your mxt should work just fine. Many of the places I use my MXT I am near power lines and I have never not been able to use my detector successfully. I havent actually tried it but if you are experiencing interference you may want to try hunting in the salt mode which to the best of my knowledge is meant for tuning out an electric charge carried in beachwater and sand. May help? I have never used the MXT in a place or in a situation where it would not find metal with the right know how as to how to hunt a certain area. HH Jason
