Post Civil War finds

For all you civil war enthusiasts I would like some help!! I found a spot in a lake last year that might have been where some soldiers had a camp. The bayonet is off a Springfield I believe and the 45's are dated 9/83. The 45/70's are dated 12/86 and the big one is undated and I have NO idea what it is.

The US emblem is very thick and looks like the square thing in the middle back unscrews with another post to keep it in place or upright. The eagle is the same on both sides and might be from the same era but I have NO idea of that either, Seems to be made from aluminum. The other gizmo is also an unknown and the 8 legs also have a design on them. its hollow and heavy brass and looks like it was attached to something at one time or another.

So far I have found 19 45's, 3 45/70's and the unknown round. Two of the buttons have anchors on them (one an eagle holding an anchor) and one has the Michigan state seal. The last just has an eagle. Maybe all from the same period maybe all dropped at different times but unlikely.

Can anybody identify the large bullet, US emblem, eagle or round thing? If you need more pictures will be happy to help.

The US button/emblem is part of the Spike bayonet Scabbard which is considered rare. Check out the source link below the pics and be sure to go back to your secret spot until its exhausted!

Not in the same hole but close. Actually everything I found was close. In 4 - 12 foot of water on a drop off. I am thinking had to be some sort of camp there. I found two very old gold rings there also. Mens bands, one with a latin inscription on the inside. Neither marked but both 10K. \

And nobody will ever find this spot!! I have exclusive permission to hunt in that lake. Now for my cannon that fell off the boat!! Even if its a small one!

Thanks for the US emblem identification!! That is it!!

The bayonet is different though. Where it attaches to the rifle is very different but close. And the angle where it goes down to the blade is longer.

It could be a slightly different bayonet style and you should look for this extra brass piece while detecting that spot.....

LOL ok thats the EXACT bayonet. I don't think I came across the other brass piece. I have hit most of that spot hard. ALTHOUGH I am sure there is more to find. BUT the bullets and buttons are after the Civil War. The bullets are from 1883 - 1896. Maybe somebody mixed and matched equipment from different wars? LOL who knows. Thanks for your help.

Hi-I'm curious if anyone has ever seen an item like this one? There are no letters or numbers on the back so I didn't include a photo. I've seen some on ebay the same size and shape but none like this one. It measures 1 3/8 x 1 3/4 inches and is made of brass.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Steve, Welcome to the forum first of all. I do want to let you know that IF you started your own topic, others will welcome you also and you will get more people looking at your item. Hijacking another thread is kind of frowned upon. People are coming here to see my items and try to idetify them. Finding someone elses item and questions on what it is isn't standard opperating proceedure.

I wish you luck identifying it. I have no clue as to what it is. Hope to see more of your finds on your own threads!!

Hi-I'm new to this website and don't know the correct procedure for posting my own thread. Sorry if I tagged along on yours. Can you direct me in the right direction? Thanks, Steve

I know your new thats why I didn't give you 20 lashes with a wet noodle! After you click on watzit forum, on the right hand side is a button Start new topic. Hit that and your all set!

Steve, Here is a screen shot of the button to start a topic. Hope to see your post soon, it will get much better response with its own topic. I've been on the receiving end of unwelcoming forums in the past but this one has been really nice and friendly. Don't feel bad about posting here since you had no bad intentions, it just changes the subject and the original poster gets cheated out on his questions about his items. See you soon.

. The 30-40 Krag was the weapon used by the U.S. in the Span-Am war and the bayonet in question is from a Trapdoor Springfield which was rendered obsolete by the Krag.

Good info, gunsil. I had to look really close to see what you added in my quote so I thought I'd post it here.

Looks to be a Fisher Body Stamp that came off the running board of a vintage auto ... same style F . HH , Woodstock
