May have found my first Civil War era button yesterday. J.MANNS EXTRA RICH GILT this is the writing on the back of the button. The front texture is smooth with no imprint. I believe this button is either copper or bronze. I have another very small button with a pebbled finish on the front and I'm thinking possibly the same era. I found a merc in the same field. I've only done a hand full of hunts this year! Happy Hunting enjoy

Copied from an answer in another forum.

J. Mann was in business from 1805 to 1843, from best I can tell. The button is a flat button, and could've been worn on a variety of clothing items.
These buttons were used up till about the Civil War (buttons were re-used when possible rather than tossed out, unless their shanks were broken).

You could have found this with a simple Google search.
