A friend and I have been romping through the woods in a spot VERY close to where I stumbled upon a 1827 large cent.

We started digging up misformed musket balls that have been dropped with the pouring spout attached. I have 2 and one seems to be missing in action. He has about 8 of them.

This ladies head was also found there and it appears to have 3 nail holes in it. It is hollow brass and had to be attached to something. Again might be from a newer period also

Then he stumbled upon this interesting item last Tuesday. From an American Revolution book it looks as if it is a trench spear from around 1780.

Yesterday he dug an 1839 Schilling at the same spot.

We doubt they camped there long as not a whole lot has been found YET. The spot has huge oak trees and pine trees in it and unfortunately is covered with 6 inches to a foot of leaves from the oaks. Another few interesting finds in the same spot that we are not sure are from the same period are brass plates about the size of a dollar bill. All have a number stamped in the middle of them.

Since I am usually after gold, this kind of hunting is very new to me. I have yet to put my machine on all metal and will do that pretty soon. The area we are finding the artifacts is about 100 sq foot. It might have been a small camp or just a place they took a break. Hopefully we will find something more significant soon. Pictures of more musket balls and the schilling soon. Today I found a lead button in the same spot. That picture tomorrow.

Interesting stuff.

The ladies head seems like 20s 30s type of style but I could be way wrong.

In for more infoz. :)

You could be right on also. Three Barber halves and numerous quarters and dimes and indians have been found NEAR here. Could have been dropped after.

It didn't have a date on it so I can't tell!!!!!

Hi Scubadetector, sure looks to be plenty of activity thereabouts and some cool stuff y'all are finding! Great potential, and a pretty wide variety of finds. You said that type hunting is new to you so I will kick in a couple of things that may help you keen up on your site. If if was a campsite even for one group passing through, it would likely have been a campsite for many groups over a period of years. Look for sign of old trails (cuts) comming into/out of, the site. Especially if there is any possibility of a river,or stream crossing nearby.Possible walking trails, horse trails and wagon roads. The waggon roads can actually look like rivines sometimes.going downhill. High water many times (even on small streams) would prevent crossing until the water went down , causing travelers to spend days or even weeks incamped, waiting on the water to receed.Hunt enough in all metal to get the true picture of how much activity the area got, digging some iron now in then. Cut (square) nails in abundance may mean some sort of structure,Horseshoe nails and military (fancy and slick)may indicate many horses(troops)had stoped over Troops always had a set aside Latrine area (usually on hillside). After you get some idea of the all metal activity, then go to Disc. and go for the goodies. High ground was good for cooler summer breezes, and the downhill sides for shelter from cold winter winds. Water, shouldn't be far away for campsites, but not always necessary when near a crossing, since there would have always been plenty of that if they were waiting for it to receed.. There is plenty more to consider and look for and that will come to you naturally as you become acquanted with the site, but I did want to mention a couple..Good Luck, and HH !, Charlie

About 100 yards from this site is Lake Huron. We are on about an 8' cliff that is above the beach. And yes silly me, I did get a horseshoe!! As I said I am new to this and I put the horseshoe in the back of my truck cause I save them anyway and didn't even think to post it!! THANKS!! And also trails do go through there. I will have some more pictures up today. My partner found part of an old lock on Saturday also. I wish we were finding a lot more. As I said. Looks to be only a small group that passed. THANK YOU for the tips!!!

From what youve shown so far I would say it definitely wasnt a small group. Either that or many groups stopped over the course of time.
A small group for a short time doesnt lose that much stuff so quickly.

Great finds. BTW - Got $50 I can borrow until next week  CCH

K, an 8' cliff by Lake Huron....I'm writing this down....lol.... Sweet finds! I'd pee my pants if I found a coin that old!
