Possible old US military medal?

Found this on some very old property in NC. Families have lived here since the mid-1700's and they have quite a bit of military history.
Looks like this small old medal was gold gilded at one time. Hoping someone out there can ID it. Based on my limited knowledge it appears to be pre-Civil War, but I'm no expert. Any thoughts?
