Possible Meteorite or nugget:shrug:

I found this item about 3 inches down while hunting in a heavily wooded area off the beaten path that was almost void of any other finds. It rang up as a solid pull tab on my F-5.

When first flushed under water it was very dark brown in color, after a overnight soak in Ketchup it took on the splotchy look shown in the far left.

I sanded the far side with 400 grit and followed with 15 micron. The right side is what it looks like after a final polish with white compound. It's slightly magnetic.

The penny is for size comparison. It weighs less than 1 gr.. Under a ten power magnifier it looks to be, by color, a mixture of mostly brass, some copper and a little iron or possibly nickel. I could see no rust.

What are your thoughts? Thanks. Knarfj

I would guess it is part of the cooper sheath from a .22 some other bullet, yes it can be slightly magnetic.

Well shoot! Sorry Ant, pun intended. After a little experimenting today I believe you're most likely correct that it's a melted copper bullet jacket.

Today after weighing a similar size piece of lead, a small split shot fishing weight, and comparing it to the weight of my whatzit, it's pretty obvious it's not a gold nugget.

My whatzit weighed in at less than 1 gr. and the split shot came in at 3 gr.. I believe if it were mostly gold it would weigh at the very least as much as the lead split shot, and most likely even more.

And about it possibly being a small meteorite? Google research says................. Not a chance!

Hey, there's always next time.:bouncy:
