Possible Civil War era find?

Found a couple of Flat Buttons, an Eagle "I" Civil War Infantry button and then this object today. Any ideas what this might be?
 
It looks like a spring loaded clasp possibly for suspenders, similar to the closing mech on a razor blade scraper. If so, you have both sides to it and should be able to separate it. The round part is the spring loaded latch if that's what it is.
