Possible Civil war campsite??

Hello everyone!!! Long time no post. But I am back. Recently I have found a new area with permission to hunt. I started to find old harmonica reeds scattered around the land along with an old stirrup. Some people tell me that they could be from the civil war. I have found alot of things that I don't know what they are apart from the stirrup, the reeds, a spoon, and a small rivet. Any ID you guys can give me on my objects would be helpful. Thanks and Happy Hunting!

So far what you've shown me is a civilian campsite. I don't see any broken pieces to a frying pan or cooking pot which show up frequently around this type of camp. The iron rings are from a horse or cattle reign equipment and the other iron is possibly from wagon parts. You've got the signs of a civilian camp, possibly 1850's-1860's. Work slower in between the iron with a smaller coil and you should find some nice old silver seated coins. Look closely on top of the ground you should find many small white shirt buttons lying on top of the ground. You should see broken glass as well. Good luck and keep us posted.

Steve

Thanks Steve!! I actually have found pieces of broken glass. I have had the disc. above iron, so shouldn't the silver show up, or does the iron still mask the coins?? Also, on a different note, when is the convention in Olathe. I do plan on trying to make it.

Yeah, the silver will show up ONLY if there is no iron around it. Trust me...it's rare to find a silver just sticking out in the open away from iron in a campsite. You have to rely on your keen senses and listen very closely how your machine is seperating the iron from the brass or silver. A simple iron horse shoe will mask an area about 18" wide, about twice as big as the actual horse shoe. You can darn bet that a good button or old silver coin could be lying underneath that iron if your in the heart of the campsite. The hard part about all this is anything larger than a square nail MUST be removed! I can't tell you how many times I've removed larger iron pieces and rechecked the hole, then I get a sweet brass hit underneath and turns out to be a button or beautiful seated half dime. Now if that don't get your blood pumping, nothing will. Think about it...your on an old site...dig it all!!!
The FMDAC Convention in Olathe will be October 17th and the hunt will be on the 18th.

Thanks!!!! That does get my blood pumping!! I guess tommorrow I will go out, set the disc to 0, and start diggin!!! Also thanks for the convention date. Due I need to signup or anything??

You know John, that did cross my mind! They are curved in and are very heavy and thick. So MAYBE this wasn't a civilian campsite, if indeed those are shell fragments. ksdigger, what is your take on those pieces?

hmmm...they do curve in but they are more oblong than rounded, that's a tough one to call. Regrettably, artillery is not my expertise. Nemo would be a good one to ask on this one.

hey bboy. at this point, you have some harmonica reeds, a knapsack rivet, an iron spoon, and what looks like a brass ring - so, yeah, it could be a cw era campsite. they're all good signs. i think johnreb and ksdigger are both right - the two iron pieces do look like shell frags, [can't really tell from the pics] there's way more civilian items shown than military. i don't know what area you live in, or what type of machine you are using either. like ksdigger says, go slow and spread out your search. just one cw era bullet or button will certainly change things. hit it again and see what else comes up. but, one thing's for sure - it's all old, and that's good! there's more there somewhere. good luck, and hh!

Thanks Ghost!! I live in Missouri. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to go back, hopefully by fri. or sat. I will get to go back!! I use the Whites M6 with the stock coil, sometimes I will use a smaller coil. Yeah, there is plenty more for sure! Any more tips? I am still fairly new at detecting, about 2 years now. Thanks!!!

Just an update, I took the possible shell frags to a local historian and he said that they are heavy duty castings for a wagon. I will take a picture of everything that I have found the last couple days and post it tommorrow. I took it all to him, and the majority of it is old wagon parts, and steve, I did finally find pieces of old kettles.

oh gee those little white buttons,,,,i knew i was missing something after all these years or relice hunting,,,,,instead of wasting your time frolicking thru the woods looking for little white shirt buttons,,,,,turn your detector on and detect,,,when you start finding bullets and buttons, well then youre in a campsite,,,,,little white buttons,,,,never heard that one before
