POSIBLE 1943 COPPER PENNY

jog

New member
I was going through some of the Penny's i have found recently, and i have this one i can't make out the last number 194?. It appears to be an 8 or a 3. Any suggestions on how to take a better look at it. Have tried magnifying glass and enlarging it on the computer.

There were only about 40 minted so the odds are it's not a genuine '43 but I hope it is. I assume you already tested it with a magnet? If you could make out the last number, see if the 3 has a tail extending down a little, a cut out 8 wouldn't have the tail. Maybe putting a piece of white paper over the date and lightly coloring the paper with a pencil might help. Good luck and keep us posted. John

Thanks for the tips.Looking at the penny laying flat, with a light next to it ,it looks more like an 8. I know the 3 should have a tail on the lower section. I don't see that .I have looked up 1943 pennies and it looks like the 3 should be a little longer than the other numbers. Maybe if i stare at it long enough it will turn into a 3.HA HA.

Need to check all my wheaties, I've got over 1000 wheaties I have found over the years, I just throw them into a can, sometimes without even looking at the dates. Thanks for the info. John

People have hoped and looked for that coin for decades. When I was a kid a Ford dealer in town offered a new Ford in exchange for one of those pennies. He never had to give a car away. Most of the few minted have been accounted for.

Use a magnet on it - surest way to know.

Not to be a wet blanket, but the odds are astronomical that you have one. If you do, I'll be looking for yours story on the evening news!
Oh, and if it turns out to be a '43 copper, better hustle on down and buy a lottery ticket. With that sort of luck, one ought to be enough.
