No big secret the 550 meter is very inexpensive compared to the 180.Most hunter use a meter to cherry pick for silver coins and nickles for hunters use to the 180 meter.Very simple solution adjust the 550 meter to 480.Much easier to watch 479-480 for silver and copper ,468-470 for Zinc ,460-470Early Wheat's and IHs ,377 Jefferson ,373-381 Buffalo and V nickles.Later Ron

Thanks Ron, I have 2 old meters and only used them for less than 1 hour apiece.H ave been waiting to convert to 180,but why bother,i never use them. I will now, thanks to you. Still wanting a meter to replace my speaker[always taped up and never used]. I will try the 480 calibration-sounds like a good system and /but not only for the poor -thanks for the tip.sam in ms

Be careful. Somebody on here said the internal meter won't work with SEF coils. I still don't see how that could happen, though. They should work fine. Once you go internal meter I don't think (?) you can ever use an external meter again. There is no better place for a meter than on top of the hand grip like any other normal detector, IMHO. I was contemplating doing my own internal meter mod until I thought about that. With my light weight GT the box is on the shaft where it should be and I like it, and then an internal meter wouldn't work well at all. Great for those who hip or chest mount all the time, though. I just don't prefer having a box set up like that unless I'm water hunting, and in which case I'm not using a meter anyway.

I think when you cut the nerve center for an in line meter in the long run after the fad wears off practical use comes to play and the value of your metered Sovereign goes down. Most land hunters don't hip mount. Hip mounted the user must look down at the bag instead of out fount the coil.LOL bobbing your head up and down meter watching could turn you into a yes man, which are too many already.

Calibrate to 500 would work better too, you only need watch one number , if you get a 5 your on a winner

Kered,I'm so use to the 180 and probably for most of us former users the 479-480 is more familar. The old dog learning new tricks secnario.
