Poor depth on new excal ll

Just got my new Excal ll 1000 and was out practicing different targets on the ground. The air testing on ground was not much different than my DetectorPro Wader with a 8 " coil. Is this the machine ,The operator or air testing on the ground. Thanks for you input .Doc.

Never assume an air test is going to give you the right reading on a ML. In the water...... it will do its job. Once you get it wet..... give us some figures. Its hard to tell sometimes what kind of depth you are getting out there with moving targets...... but you should be able to tell by the amount of finds. Thats the gauge i use. It tells me how effective my machine is.... not depth.

Agree, some say Minelabs air test fine while others say no. I have expereinced both ways, where in some air tests I'm lucky to get 3 or 4" on a coin, so I know it can happen. And that's with Explorers or the Sovereign. Also, if you air test near EMI around just outside of your house it will kill the depth too.

I found a US 1 dollar coin on a beach, wet sand. Well over 12 inches. I would say around 15 inches, and thats a conservative estimate. I was not getting many targers. So I tried PP mode. The wind was quite. I barely got a change in threshold. Switched to Disc and got nothing. I used scoop an removed about 2 inches of sand, and the PP signal got stronger, still no disc. Wasn't until a few scoops I could start to hear it in Disc. She was deeeeeep. I wish I could do that with a fatty gold lol.

I was very discouraged air testing a machine a long time ago. Its not very accurate. Take it in the water. Give it a few solid hunts. I will admit I am always amazed at what I miss when I revisit a spot "I cleaned out". Its clad, tipped on its side. Messes with the machine lol. HH an GL -Joe

Air test are never worthy of actual use! If your new to the BBS world, a word of caution if you want to dig deep targets (deep Gold) you'll need to be a slow mover out there! This is not joke. As joeb1999 says PP is a deeper way to use the Excalibur it when used with the discrimination will be a powerfull tool! If your a hunter that believes that the more ground you cover the more you'll find your in for a rude awakening, but I'll thank you for removing all those loud coin's that just are in my way! Really not kidding here! Most of my great targets were nothing more than a threshold break in PP!

air tested my new Sov and it barely made 4in.

Then I remembered what is reinerated in this thread. . .

No worries!

I can tell you if I air test in my backyard it's EMI city due to overhead power lines going to houses and such. Can't hardly raise the sensitivity if at all and the VDI and machine is all over the place. Either Auto or max or near low manual to do any kind of testing. Even away from EMI, sometimes a Minelab just won't air test well at all, while at other times I've got outstanding depth air testing. No ryme or reason, but I think the machine gets confused and ignores the coin on the ground as if it's part of the ground load due to the unique way Minelabs handle the ground (the best way in the industry, and it ain't conventional auto ground tracking found on other machines either, which can cost you depth).
