I have shown you pictures of this Tallship,in the past, but not from a water view.[attachment 64812 TheFriendship012.jpg] She's a beauty! The "Friendship" is built to replicate the original, which was built in 1796/97, across the river from this exact location. The original sailed around the World 15 times! Visiting Canton China,Sumatra,India,Germany,Italy, until the War of 1812. Returning from Archangel Russia, not knowing of the War, She was captured by the British, and condemned as a prize, and sold at auction in London in 1813. [attachment 64813 TheFriendship023.jpg] The New "Friendship" was (the Hull) constructed in 1996/98 by the Scarano Shipyard,in Albany New York. The rest was performed by many different organizations,Staff of Salem Maritime NHS,Naval Historic Center in Boston, and Dion's Boat Yard in Salem. She is maintained by volunteers, and the National Park Service in Salem. This Replica was based on a 9 foot model of the original,(built during her second voyage in 1798,by Her Second Mate, and ships Carpenter)located in the Peabody Essex Museum,in Salem. Its also quite a place, having treasures, from the East, on display. Along with the Model, they viewed original period paintings(1805 ships portrait),and even some of the ship's Logs![attachment 64815 TheFriendship015.jpg] The Figurehead is a Woman in a classic dress, holding a bouquet of flowers.[attachment 64816 TheFriendship022.jpg] There is 55 MILES of rope for the rigging![attachment 64817 TheFriendship013.jpg][attachment 64818 TheFriendship029.jpg] A few more facts....She was,at time of being built,1996/98, the largest, Wooden, Coast Guard Certified, sailing vessel, built in New England, in over 100 years! She also has 150 TONS of lead for ballast. The vessels total weight is 342 Tons. Neat stuff!! Rj

Fifty-five miles of rope riggin' to boot ! That ship is a masterpiece !! A trip on that ship would be something you'd never forget. An excellent post !:clapping:

I'd love to be climbing around in the rigging of that one. Imagine sailing around the world on that. Beautiful figurehead.... The rigging on it really is impressive. Imagine jocking all those sails around.

It is so difficult for me to envision folks sailing one of these boats around the world...it would have been all work and no play sailing that boat.

Ron, does anyone know what happened to the original "Friendship" after the British sold it at auction in 1813? Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

a swim grid for fishing off of;) Love those ships but would not want to haul them out for scraping!

a harbor full of ships and their masts in the old days.guess you could probably tell and towns properity by the number of ships.
