Pond hunting?

I have exclusive access of a lake/large pond that was built in the 1920s for fishing & possibly swimming. It was a resort/recreation area at that time. It doesnt have a sandy beach.... I imagine that the lakebottom is made up of mud & from the looks of the shoreline the occassional fieldstone. It is only used for fishing anymore & no longer available to the public.
I am wondering if I should take a stab at it or not. I have never water hunted before .... what would be required? Am I right in assuming it would be a serious pain in the Arse digging in lakebottom mud? I can just imagine all the beer cans fishermen have tossed in the lake over the years. :( Oh I forgot to mention.... there is also a seriously annoyed beaver that lives in this lake.... slaps its tail on the water anytime people are around the lake. Also.... I cannot swim..... never learned. I figure I could wear lifejacket? Am i just asking for trouble thinking about detecting this lake?

Hi Jim

I dont post much but you worry me dont even think of water hunting if you dont swim go some where and learn to swim first it only takes one day then go easy.
I have pulled 22 people out of the water over the years who thought it would be allright to go a little ways in the water even tho they did not swim I never lost even one of them.
