Poll: Golden U-max vs. Deleon

Prospector

I presently own the Golden and have made some good finds. The low and high tones are easy to distinguish, but middle tones tend to overlap. If I went to the single tone Deleon and let the I.D. sort things out would that be eaiser, or is the Golden an all around better machine? Opinions from users would be appreciated.

I have been using a DeLeon for the past 4 years and have done really well with fourty rings to date 21 just this year. I have dug deep silver coins in parks that have been hunted hard over the years it is a very easy to use machine and am very happy I decided to go with it when I was in the market to buy a new machine. As for the golden I could not say as I have never used one but have heard good things about it

You can't go wrong either way, but once your used to the notch mode it will be hard to beat. I have been using the golden since they were introduced. I found I was digging less quality finds. I tended to rely an the meter and not dig all I should have. But by knowing the probable id of the target & its depth.

I agree with Doug.

Haven't used the Golden, but have been getting to know a DeLeon since just after Labor day. So far I really like it, but I can see where some might prefer the multi-tones of the Golden. Anything that helps separate the goodies from the trash is a plus to me.

Tones are good to have, but I would take a meter over the 3 or 4 tones. Meter numbers go from 0 to 95, offering better accuracy. When I see number 40, I know that is the number assigned to nickles. Zinc pennies 79 - 83. Various style pulltabs are from 35 to 61. Iron is 0. Small foil is around 06. Dimes, quarters, and solid copper pennies are 95. The numbers do jump around tho if the target is deeper or when I'm swinging too fast.

I saw Uncle Willy mention an article about how to set the Golden for rejecting tabs and hitting nickels, called the 7-3-5 setting. I tried a web search and did not turn up article posting. I wonder if anyone could find and post the article information and maybe add commentary about how setting a Golden up this way may affect finding gold rings of various sizes and composition?

The setting points vary from one detector to another so the 7-3-5 settings will very likely only apply to the specific detector Willy mentioned, but setting the Golden to accept nickels and reject tabs, even the newer two hole style, isn't a problem. At least it isn't on mine. Select one of the notch modes, turn the disc knob until it rejects a nickel and then turn it back until it accepts them. Then turn the notch width control counterclockwise until a new style two hole tab is just rejected. At those settings my Golden will detect nickels and reject all tabs except bent or broken ones.

I've been using a DeLeon since Labor day and really like it. However, I don't know that I'd get rid of a perfectly good Golden if I were doing well with it in order to get the Deleon unless I really wanted the TID feature. If I were starting out from scratch, I'd probably opt for the Deleon. Of course anything worth having is worth having two of, so why not one of each?
