Police intimidation?

MrGee

New member
Went to a neighboring small town this afternoon even though it's 90, sunny with humidity off the scale. Nice park there but because of the heat and time of day i was the only person in the park. Checked the tot lot but found next to nothing so I decided I'd check the vollyball court quickly and take off. Just got started when a police car pulled into the park. He drove past me and went to the far side of the parking llot where he could see me and my car and he parked. Now you might think he was goofing off and just looking for a shady spot to loiter in. Not so. Parked in the full sun. He made no move to get out of the car or made any move at all. I finished up the volleyball court, packed my stuff in the car and took off. He was still sitting there. Was he trying to intimidate me?

No, I don't think so. I see police sitting around all the time in different places. I think they are taking care of loose end's where they won't be disturbed too much and still be on the beat. He also may have been amazed at your ability to detect and hold on to the youngn's besides.
Good hunting,Gary

I agree with Gear Box. He may have been working on reports or something while also staying "visible" to the general public or just taking a break. He might have been curious about metal detecting and just wanted to see if you would find anything or to see if the detector looked easy to operate. Who knows, maybe he just "liked" you :cheekkiss:and wanted to see you bend over to recover a target  Regardless, he didn't say anything so I wouldn't worry about it.

Must be a Schenectady, NY cop then. There all so FAT that they have trouble getting in and out of the car.
Just having some fun, but it's true.
I've had cops watch me all the time and never said anything.

Happy Hunting

Sounds like a good deal to me , you got police protection and you didn't have to worry about anyone calling the cops on you .;)

From the land of the Bluenose.....used to park my patrol car near the ball fields and watch games...not catch speeders. Maybe the bouy was interested in the hobby. Did he have a coffee on the dash?

NAH he was just doing his job..

and porbably needed a bit of time to get
caught up with papers etc ..if he wanted to hassle
you you wouyld have known!!!~

I agree with the others in that he was probably catching up on reports, paperwork, or just interested in the hobby and curious to see if you were finding anything. Or he may have been sitting in his police car, reading the FindMall Forums on the internet, and enjoying the wonderful stories and finds that others post. Just as I'm doing at this moment.

I'm sure that if you would have approached him, he would have loved to hear about the hobby and all it has to offer. Or he may already own a collection of detectors and was admiring yours. Who knows? You quite possibly could have made a new friend and gained a MD'ing buddy. Cops are human and enjoy the same activities and hobbies as everybody else.

As someone who has worked with the police if he had an issue he would have talked to you. It seems to me more like paperwork catch up time and wanted to see if you found anything good. Ya might have made a detecting partner there.

Funny story about Police and Metal Detecting.............I was at a wedding after party, at about 2 am at the hotel me and a few other decided that it was a great idea to hit the woods across the street from the hotel. These are all my friends who bust my balls about metal detecting anyway. So I had my detector in my truck, so I said "lets go!!" The four of us head across the street with a shovel, a metal detector, two guys still in our suits, and the girls had changed by now. And we all had beers in our hands. A cop pulled up and said " what kind of detector is that?" I said " Garrett Gtax 750" he said " thats cool man, have fun guys" hahaha Nice huh? 2am 4 people drinking and treasure hunting in suits. And he says 'have fun" I love it.

Most cops are as nice as you let them be and some of them are as mean as their badge lets them be. I've met both and appreciate the former and dispise the latter. This officer sounds okay to me. Next time, introduce him to the hobby of metal detecting.

I was detecting at an ORV trailhead last year and a state trooper stopped to use the restroom. We talked for a while about my finds then he tipped me off to a site of an old farmstead. Can't be upset with that.

I sorta doubt it.. Well unless he's been after you before..
He was probably just curious to what you were doing, or making
sure you weren't doing anything blatantly destructive.
To me, if he was playing intimidation, he would have come over and
hassled you, and ran you off claiming illegal conduct. :nono:
That he didn't even bother to talk to you actually seems a bit positive.
Maybe he doesn't have a problem with you detecting there after
watching you a while..
On the other hand, maybe he was pondering such activity, but your
leaving kind of beat him to the punch.. Hard to say..
I'm guessing it was a slow Wednesday, and he didn't have anything else
to do, so he decided to watch you for a while..

I'm curious... did you dig during this time or just swipe? Maybe he was waiting for you to dig then say something? I think we have too many laws saying where we can or can't dig... as long as we respect the land and leave no trace of our dig then what's the big deal? Why let it lay in the ground for eternity when it deserves to be preserved?

Surprisingly enough, when he pulled in I was checking the volleyball court and during the time he was there I found absolutely nothing so I moved no sand at all. I had already checked the tot lot and since it was near 90 degrees and sunny, wasn't going to do anymore. So I guess the short answer is if he was waiting for me to dig something, he was as disappoited as I was. I think the majority have it right. He was looking for a quiet spot to do his reports and couldn't have cared less about me or what I was doing.
