Polar bear licence plate ......

Tom in Victoria

New member
Spent several years in Inuvik, N.W.T. ( grab an atlas folks,it is in the western corner of Canada's Northwest Territories)

In the office I took over in '76,a desk drawer gave up an envelope holding a set of plates, that were never on a vehicle. I kept this one and gave the other to an elderly friend years ago. I believe no other animal plate is issued in North America; regardless, it is a neat design.

The RCMP letters mean our... Royal Canadian Mounted Police

No, the plate is not for sale nor may the image be used for profit. In time I may sell or just give it to a serving or retired member of the RCMP.

Winter doldrums are upon us, thought I'd throw on a bit of colourful history you might find interesting. After all that build up, sure hope I can make the photo show up !

In 1973 Craig, I'd guess the population of the NWT was about 45,000 all up. In 1976 when I arrived in Inuvik, there were supposedly 1500 vehicles of all sizes and types. (There was no road in there until '79). I doubt that there were more than 10,000 sets punched out for the entire NWT. I'd think that light trucks and cars would have only have numbered about 3000 or less in that year. I'm guessing of course, too lazy to do the research ! Limited edition plate in a sense, doubt more than a dozen virgin sets exist.

Sure do like your Alaska plate Vernon, in fact I just digitally stole a copy to keep my bear company ! I can't recall seeing this plate on the road though. Both plates do justice to our respect for these impressive animals. Thanks for your comeback post.

... Check it out on I-75 North or South.

that non- native boa or anaconda is of concern. Real problem I have is that that logo on the bottom, why, that's our description of my Victoria ! Honeymooners and retirees, can't hardly move without tripping over them, and thats in the fast lane !
