Pointers on using a BH Landstar.

Hello Folks.

I just bought a new BH Landstar-they were on a good special on Ebay, and I could not resist!

I owned this machine once before, and sold it-I regretted selling it,so glad to have an example of this

fine machine again, they only thing I can see different is the 'forearm holder',its smaller and got slits in it

for a arm band.

When I had my old machine I had some photocopies out of old metal detecting magazines from U.S and Aust

That gave some good information on using the landstar.Does anyone here have any links to similar articles?

Also anyone here using the Landstar, that might like to share their experinces and advice, there may be some good threads

here on the landstar that someone can point me too.

Thanks-Chris-Australia

Perhaps the most important "trick" I have learned using any metal detector is that when I get a good signal, like a $0.50 or a dollar signal, is to raise the coils as I'm swinging it. If I continue to get a similar signal while the coil is 6 or more inches above the ground, that tells me the target is a large piece of something, most likely a can or such. Granted, it could be a Mason jar full of walking liberty half dollars but most likely just junk.

Also, the BH instructions say that if you don't get the same signal swinging at 90 degrees that it junk. I have found coins that sounded differently when swinging at 90 degrees. It is because the coin is not lying horizontal and parallel to the earth's surface.

I normally start with sensitivity set between 1-3 o'clock position; ground balance set to "preset" (turned completely clockwise); and discrimination depending on what I'm looking for. I typically search parks around football/soccer/baseball fields that have a lot of trash in them so I'll disc. out everything below zinc pennies. I know I'm losing gold and nickels, but at this point not interested in digging everything. With the limited times I get to hunt, I'm looking for silver coins and/or dimes and quarters.

I'll hunt in disc. mode. Once I find a target, I switch to all metal mode and ground balance the coil next to the target with the ground balance button in order to pin point the target. I'll pass the coil over the target and then offset it next to the target and re-ground balance the coil in order to get closer to pinpointing the target. I've found doing this procedure a couple of times will get me right on top of the target most times. The target will be right in the middle of the center ring of the coil. I dig a plug the size of the center coil and the target will 8/10 times be in the plug.

I have about 100 hours on the machine and found that technique works best for me. If you have any specific questions, I'll try to answer.
