Pointer: BEST FOR F75?

rsadler

New member
I just received my F75 and wondering which is the best pointer to get. I know there are those that attach to the unit and those that are hand held (separate from the F75). Thank you for some good advice. My first time out...I've discovered I need this extra help.

I use the Garrett Propointer. It's sensitive, gives a loud signal (plus vibration) and built very strong. Can also be submersed for washing up but not used as a total underwater unit. I like the fact that it is a stand alone unit and not attached to the detector. as I can use it with myother detectors too.

have been hunting over 32 years, and "never "used one!..don't need it!..learn how to properly pinpoint with the "big" pinpointer!..your detector, and don't be concerned!....some people swear by them, however after hunting for awhile, you will be "good" at pinpointing your target, and your recovery time will be fast anyway,AND you WILL be able to recover your target with no damage consistently!

in addendum!..forgot to mention that learning "proper" recovery (digging) techniques also come into play here as well!..

JT, you've got a lot of experience and you obviously are good at detecting and comfortable with the way you do it.

But you're swimming against the current here. There's a reason that most dirt fishers, including the very experienced very good ones, now use a pinpointer.

Of course you don't need a pinpointer to detect successfully. But once you use a good one, no matter how good your pinpointing techniques, you will always want to use one. It does save time and makes dirt fishing even more enjoyable.

I look at it like TV. Before the 1980's people used to watch TV just fine without a remote. But I don't know anybody now who doesn't use a remote, unless they've lost it.

Never used an inline probe, but of the 4 probes I've used my preference by far is the Garrett Propointer.

good point!..well taken!,however i enjoy the "hell" out of the hobby without one,but that is just me and the way i perceive it to be,and of course others may or may not feel differently about it!..to be honest,i was actually considering purchasing one at some point, but decided against it,because i really dont feel that it is a benefit to ME!

rsadler - consider these things:

The Garrett Propointer is a very good hand help PP and you can use it with any detector. It is a no-motion, all metal, detector and gets from 2 - 3" of depth. Folks that are getting less than that might be accidentally detuning it or it's detuning based on interference. If you turn it on close to the ground or close to any metal, it will detune. The no-motion, all-metal aspect allows you to pretty much point right to the target once you;re within detectable distance. The closer your target gets to the tip the faster rate it beeps (2" is a methodical slow beeping, touching is a steady tone) and the faster it vibrates. It's doesn't add weight to your detector and comes with a holster or fits into most tool pouches with loops since the form factor is a tapered "tube".

The SunRay probe is a second coil on your detector and if you're running your detector sensitivity fairly high, you can detect 4" or more. However, if conditions require you to lower your sensitivity you're pinpoint depth will be lowered too. If you hunt in discriminate, then your sunray probe will also be discriminating when you're using it. This is valuable because often when a hole is opened the TID can change, and you can make a quick decision to not recover based on the new TID. It does add weight to your detector. Because it's operating as a second coil, your detector's setttings affect it. Normally with the F75, you'll be hunting in motion-discriminate mode. This means you have to wave the probe over the target to find it and may still be picking up handfuls of dirt to check them. The Sunray's tones are in your headset so your'e not drawing attention to yourself or disturbing others. The SunRay also has a very nice "wow" factor. It just looks cool :)

I think MY recovery time was better with the propointer though.

have a look at some pinpointers in action on those videos

I use Treasure Mate pinpointer since it suite my needs for small gold
hope that helps

VERY HELPFUL: I sent back the 580 and settled for the Garrett. Maybe that is the best place for me. However, love the pistol probe. Maybe I should have sprung for the pistol rather than the 580. Thanks again!

At twilight or night time and early mornings pinpointers really come into ther own, in summer its imposible to detect the beaches while full of sunbathers and you have to go late once the people have left, no need for a light to damage you night vision, with the pinpointer its not necesarry.

Well if you have the cash the best hands down are the uniporbe..

A good probe saves you finds from being scratched they cut down the time spent trying to grab gobs of dirt and waving it in front of the coil to each his or her own. I use the uniprobe and have two and get four inches in Calif Gold Country Soil. In fact I have two one as my backup. They are PI very easy..I have tried most of the good provbes out there and nothing comes close to the Uniprobe

If you want wired..Sunray Fx1
If you want Wireless I use the Garrett Propointer..
I am not sure how the Detector Pro pistol probe acts alongside the F75..Bill Ladd might could tell you more about that.. I like the Garrett...No interference..
