Plug question on the 1270

skookum

New member
High,
I`m getting tired of swinging the weight of the control box around for hours on end, so I decided to chest mount my 1270.
Problem arises that the coil cable is too short for this application.
Now not wanting to splice cable in between to lengthen it, here

Dude you come to the right place with that question. I made a hip mount and a chest mount for my 1270 3 years ago and I swing it all day even with the 10.5 coil. Had the same coil problem on mine and I over came that by making it from an extra cable I had for my fisher 555-D detector that I also made a hip/chest mount. 2 ways to fix it #1 by enough wire about 4', you want at least 7' cable, cut the connector off, solder one end to the cut off wires (don't forget to slide on a piece of heat shrink so you can cover the wire and insolate each wire with tape so not to short each other out and then splice it in at the connector .Check to make sure your coil wire matches the connector wire color. Example red wire on each end , and the whiteis connected to both reds. If you happen to get the same 5 wire color pattern then that a no brainer. the connectors are on line but not in the right way, the male end needs the male threads and the female needs the female threads, I cut my 555-D cable and unclipped the connector covers and switched and then slpiced the wires back together. works great for me.If you want pics of what I made email me.
pb23@optonline.net. doing it yourself is the cheapest way. I have a few lines on the extension cable. if you handy its easy anymore info you need shout out i'M here.( Don't take off the handle!!)

High shooter,
Thanks for your response.
I have seen your hip as well as your chest mount conversion that you posted here and on another site.
I plan to go a slightly different route though.
My 6000 Di Pro SL has the exact same plug/jack configuration as the 1270.
As you might understand, it would be far easier to make one extension cord than to cannibalize 5 coils to extend their cables by cutting off the female plugs and splicing wire in between.
I will be using a military shoulder harness (Alice) and mount the control box on a thick sheet of rubber connected between front side of the shoulder straps.
The military belt has ample holes to attach my folding spade pouch as well as one or two other small pouches plus a canteen.
I do plan to remove the handle on the 1270 because I do not like the looks of it sticking out front.
It is also easier to wear a rain jacket with the control box being flush up front.
The switch will be mounted to a mountain bike bar end grip or something similar so I can to operate the detector one handed because I usually carry my folding shovel in the other hand when detecting.
This will necessitate running a second cable from the back of the stem to the control box - which is why I want to use spiral cord for the coil extension cable. You can intertwine 2 spiral cables quite easy so they act as if it they were only one and additionaly tie them together with strong sewing thread every 10 inches or so.
This can be undone in a very short time, should I wish to change coils.
The cost of the whole conversion would amount to a female plug, a male jack , some spiral cord and a bar end grip.
I already have the Alice harness and belt as well as the thick rubber mat.

When I was running a 1270 I just used a harness, I could take all the weight off that I needed. You can make your own for little of nothing, if you think you would like to go that direction I think I still have some pictures that I could dig up. I even bought a ready made harness but didn't like it, I was to attached to the detector came up with one that I could just hook or unhook. The store bought one was mounted big time to the detector so if you wasn't using it, it was just hanging there or you had to un-install it.

So another answer to your problem could be as simple as a strap off an old carry bag and some bungee cord.

I have the same setup for my harness except I use an LBE harness (Load Bearing Equip.)and pistol belt with canteen and coin pouch Garrett PP and a folding tree saw for roots and a carp. hammer holder for my folding entrenching tool that I cut down 3 1/2".Harness is real comfortable and keeps the wieght off my waist and helps my pants from falling down, also clip my cell phone to the D-ring on the shoulder strap. Been in the military for forty years I have tons of gear packed away.Leaving the handle on will keep it tight to the body with a Velco strap and it doesn't swing or move about, plus it doesn't void the warranty. When I send it back for repair I have to put it back together or my warranty is no longer good. Bought a new handle and foam from Fisher and put that back on the handle also bought the screws and nuts for it. About $10.00 total.
