Hi all, another question...the lower portion of the rod that connects to the coil, is yours black on the V3i or more silver, guy told me they don't paint the bottom rod rod black like the upper rod cause its fiberglass? Can anyone verify this? Sorry for the dumb questions but I bought this detector This past friday and just doesn't seem right? some features not working. Please reply Ron

Mine is black, but paint color makes no difference. The main thing is you can't have anything metallic near the coil, hence the attach nut, bracket etc are all plastic. Lower rod is probably fiberglass. (but not a materials expert) Just looks that way to me.

Thanks for responding, I was just curious because mine looks like someone took fine sandpaper to it, now I doubt whites would send the machine this way, upper rod black lower silverish with sanding marks? Thanks Ron

The fiberglass lower scratches really easily and it could happen detecting around dry brush or transporting here and there. The rod is slightly silverish, it is not flat black or gloss black.

What other questions do you have? You said that it had some features that where not working properly.

I think as long as you use Whites OEM parts you shouldn't have any problems with that rod. I change my coils at the upper rod so all my coils have the upper and lower rod both which makes for easy changing cause you never have to worry about re-wrapping the cord every time.

As far as I know the fiber rods have never been painted. The color is the color of the material.
It makes no difference if the lower rod and mounting bolt are metal. It would no have an effect on performance. Earlier Whites had metal rods and bolts. If there is no relative motion between the coil, rod, and bolt, the detector doesn't see it. Rob
