How many of you have tried a few different detectors? And how many of you kept some of those detectors and why?
I had a X5 got rid of it fast, didn't like the way it was laid out, didn't like the way it worked.
I had a Explorer, didn't understand it and it was hard to get it to stop falsing.
I had a DFX and loved it but it had no depth and after all of the years I have been detecting I want depth!
I have a CZ3 and have found it to be innovative and deep. Not as good on modern day parks and fields (which I hunt a lot of) but it did find some great old deep coins out here in the bay area! Now I live near Sacramento.
I have the CZ70 pro and found it to do a better job on modern day parks and schools. Likes to find coins grouped together and coins mixed with iron or trash. Has some nice depth and the relic tone has found me some junk jewelry and zinc pennies and a few old keys. No old coins but a lot of flip tops. This machine like the CZ3 loves nickels. I come home with at least one third of my coin count being nickels.
Gold has been a problem on all of my detectors if you want to dig the trash I'm sure you will find some gold and of course you can dig deeper targets but that has not worked. I have dug pull tabs out of the ground at six inches. When are they going to deal with that problem if NASA can put a man on the moon can't NASA TOM help us find more gold???
So I'm looking at different detectors, I guess I am always looking at different detectors and they all seem to be the same just work differently. The DFX was a radical machine you could do so much programing on that machine and tailor fit it to your needs. It is so cool but I couldn't program the depth so it was a trade off.
I have looked at the NEWFORCE R1 and the COINSTRIKE and after I have read all of the other reviews on different detectors no one has anything bad to say. The forums are great but if you are a White's guy that is it and so on. You can't ask a question on their forums with out getting them mad and ready to lynch you.
So is it more of the middle of the road detectors coming out and no high end. And how come there are no rumors out there to keep this hobby alive. All the big boys have not really come up with anything really new and different. And the forums are the ones that are keeping the big boys alive and yet no one knows anything about what is coming out next.
Am I all alone here?

& I pretty much agree with what your saying. I have not heard of anything new, but you never know. Some companies are more secretive than others & the Excel just dropped in suddenly unlike the X-5 that was built up ahead of time. I always say I know very little about the "engineering aspects" of the hobby, but I think detector technology is sorta at it's max almost (For now). Meaning, all the major brands will find stuff & there's been no huge depth breakthroughs. No one brand that really goes 2x as deep, etc. That's why a 15 yr old 1266x can still out hunt the new $1200 unit loaded with all the bells & whistles. Instead of lots more depth, the hobby has become more specialized. I see lighter units & cheaper units (like the ID-Excel) that "GIT R DUN". You mentioned the 3D. That is a unit specialized & intended for coinshooters who want to hunt 50's & earlier sites & find nickels & indian heads others missed. If I was more of an old parks hunter I would use a 3D all the time. For me, I love the Coin$trike because it seems perfect for my type of hunting. Great at old cellar holes that are loaded with square nails, where a CZ was not as good in that situation. I also just mentioned in another post that I loved the depth of my 1266/1270, but they loved our hot rocks. The C$/Excel's solved that problem. So, I say just find out whatever machine works best for your area or type hunting & stick with it. Skill of the operator means alot too I think Skill comes from many hours on one unit. HH, Bill

I got started with a BH Tracker IV. After I got 'hooked', I wanted more performance that I got with the T-IV, so I tried out four more BH's but was disappointed that they didn't really seem to give me more than my T-IV. Then I started researching all the machines but Garretts. For some reason, his machines just don't appeal to me. Can't say anything bad, can't say anything good. They just don't appeal to me personally
So my next desision was between a MXT and a Cortes. I finally chose the Cortes. I liked it and was doing ok. Then I bought the Golden as a backup. WOW...Got Tone id? The Golden turned out to be a real 'personal fit'. It didn't have the meter and bells & whistles but the tone id really fit me. Much less fatiquing to use, and I was digging more good targets with it than I was with the Cortes. I knew the Cortes was going to be replaced.
I started researching again for a top of line target id detector with tone id. I had to make a decision between the Explorer II, DFX and CoinStrike. I ruled out the Explorer II just from all that I read on the forums. Great detector...not for me.
The DFX looks to be a great detector and I was going to get it, but a second hard look at the CoinStrike told me this was a sleeper that most people were overlooking and it had the features I wanted in a top line machine. What I read on the forums told me that same thing. It was a sleeper. So I went for it. The people like Bill, JD(TX), Tony, Bugar, John, Mtdoramike and others who put in the time with it were sold on it. I was sold on it before I bought it and it isn't letting me down. It grows on me more everytime I use it. It 'fits'.
I still watch and read whats coming along, but I no longer have that 'itch' to try that next machine or that other 'feature' because I have found my fit.
You just need to find your 'fit'. Who knows...it might be a CoinStrike
Happy CoinStriking

Wow... my experience pretty much mirrors Mike's... first Bounty Hunters (started with a Tracker 4, then a LandRanger, had a QD2 for a while) then to a Tesoro Golden (which I didn't like as much as he did, but that was mainly lack of experience on my part... ), then to a Bandido II uMax (with a Cleansweep coil, I still have that one... it's a clad VACUUM, but I don't find much else) then to a Minelab Explorer, then over to Fishers... I've got a CZ6A and now the C$.
Mike's right, it's all about personal fit. All detectors "work," to a degree, but some match your personal preference and local conditions better than others. The C$ seems to be a pretty close match for me so far. I really like my CZ, but I have a hard time in trash with it, especially iron. It's pretty good on the beach. My favorite beach hunter was the Minelab Explorer, but I live so far away from the ocean that it didn't make sense to keep it. And I never could pinpoint worth a zinc with it, always dug huge pits.
I do wish Fisher would build some other coils for the C$, as I'm a big fan of smaller coils. Haven't had much time at all on the C$ yet, but so far it seems to be a good fit for me. It DOES take some getting used to, but I already like it much more than the Minelab I had. About the only way to know for sure is to buy it and try it!
This forum is a big help, too... there's tons of really good information here, and as a C$ "newbie" I'm really thankful for all the help that everyone has freely given in their posts. You folks are the best! I've been collecting posts into a "C$ how-to" document, and I'm amazed at the amount of helpul info there is here.
HH, BG

Hopefully SunRay will build some coils for the C$ soon like they did with the CZ series. I'd love a 5" & the big 12.5 inch...I'd be dancin'!
