I saw that last night. Bummer. You CW hunters need to be careful.

Here is the text below.

Civil War cannonball kills relic collector
Hobby cost collector his life, shaking close-knit community of relic hunters

updated 7:17 a.m. PT, Sat., May. 3, 2008
CHESTER, Va. - Like many boys in the South, Sam White got hooked on the Civil War early, digging up rusting bullets and military buttons in the battle-scarred earth of his hometown.

As an adult, he crisscrossed the Virginia countryside in search of wartime relics

This is a very sad story.

Would really make a person think when hunting around sites that have this potential. 40 miles to the east of me near Fort Scott .... they have uncovered a few of these but I can't think of them actually finding a live one.

My heart goes out to those affected!

I heard of this happenig more than once. Ive know someone who has dug live shells but never heard of on exploding while being dug. Only while being drilled. My friend had a live 60 pounder until he let the bomb squad demolish it. If you think you have a live relic you should have it checked. There where some that were mercury filled that are very sensitive. If you do have a llive shell the bomb squad will defuse it if its possible. I stay away from the live stuff just not woth it. You sure hate to hear of stories like this.
