Please HELP!! Ultrasonic cleaner

scubadetector

New member
Well I got a shock when I went to my jewler today. They don't want to clean any more of my finds. They said that I find so much that I need to buy my own cleaner. They also wanted to sell me one for 90.00. The same one on ebay for 22.00 buy it now.

Ok, so I will probably buy one. Anybody have one and if they would reccomend it? Thank you.

Sounds like you're makin' that hookah pay off for you. I have yet to get into the water; still looking for a farmer john.

Since you are rakin' in the loot on a regular basis, be sure and buy a unit that will hold up to the task. If it's a commercial unit, all the better. I used ultrasonic cleaners a lot while making crown, bridges and jewelry, years ago. It gives the most thorough cleaning and much, much faster than simply the old method of "electrocuting" your finds with a used charger.

Keep up the good work. I am green with envy, bud! But I should be joining you pretty soon. I have everything but a good wetsuit. And with that, I am taking my time to find a good suit that fits well; like a hyperstretch or superstretch. Both are high-end items but I know I'll be in the suit a lot this season and I need it to be comfortable.

Keep postin'. I LIKES it!!!!!

Arkie, I haven't got the hookah in the water yet. I have 5 tanks and have been using them. I still haven't made it float but it runs great. I don't want to get it out till I can use it the whole day like from 6:00 am until dark!! Still a bit too cold for me to spend more than 5 hours in the water at one time!!

Thanks for the info. I see a commercial machine will run almost 300.00. I am not looking to spend that much but I might have to bite the big one and do it. I do want one that will last. Thank you.

This is the one that I bought and have been using for the last two summers. It kicks butt.

Thanks VERY much for all your responses. I will pick one this weekend and let everyone know my choice. The one with the 10 year warranty is a bit steep for my budget maybe. I will see what my wife will allow!!

Yeah, I forgot that part. I usually put about 50/50 Mr. Clean and water.

It's amazing how clean and sparkling it gets those diamond rings.

Very nice Mike. Does it take the tarnish off of 10K rings that have been in the water for a thousand years or so it seems?? Good example is the middle one in the picture:

I probably need my dremmel and some jewlers rouge.

No, not at all. What it's good for is cleaning around and under stones and deep into settings, to get the crud out from beneath the stones and let the light through. It's also great for chains, to really get into the links and clean them. You can often see the dirt "explode" from within a ring ir a chain when you turn the machine on, like a little "Pigpen" cloud around it.

As for gold bands and silver, there is one terrific way to clean them and make them like new and that's electrolysis. Make a simple setup like this one, very nicely explained by a fellow local hunter:

For gold bands that aren't ancient and heavily tarnished (and for the silver ones after the shocking) use this awesome stuff:

Hi guys thanks for info on Ultrasonic cleaner. Can you clean your found coins with it???? I have a tumbler but 4 hours and the mess is kind of getting to me. Thanks for the info and reading. Z

Nope...they are no good for coins. Only rings with stones in settings and for fine to medium chains. If you put a gold or silver band or a coin in it there wouldn't be enough difference to make it worth the effort. As for piles of found coins, it would be good for removing the dirt from them but no better than just washing them and letting them dry. And the mess from the dirt would quickly make a mess of the cleaner and the solution. The tumbler is the way to go for coins.

Thanks Mike. Appreciate the quick response. Z
