Please help identify this

Can you identify this? I have had 2 suggestions. One was that it could be the top of a ladies compact and the other was the front of a Victorian perfume brooch. The grill work is open, so I am not sure that it would work for either of those. The grill sits in the outer ring and there is a ring in the back to hold the grill. I'm sure somebody will also give me a better term to use other than grill. The back half of the object could not be located. It is about 2 1/4" diameter.

Thanks for looking,
BB

You could be right. I doubt this will ever be identified with any certainty. It has no value, just a piece of curiosity.

Thanks,
BB

I wouldn't say it has no value, but it sure is a piece of curiousity as well as history. Do you think those are stones in the settings or glass ? Too bad there are six missing. It would actually be nice to see someome ID this for you. I think it's a nice piece. Ron

I have one I found that loos similiar except it doesn't have any sets. Mine has a little attachment on the back that made me think maybe it had been part of a belt buckle or something like that.

Ron,
I don't think they are real stones. I suspect just colored glass. One local guy thought it was more interesting than the breastplate that I found the same day. Of course, some of these guys have found multple breatplates, so they are old hat.
Thanks for looking,
BB

dirtdigginlady,
I don't think this one is a belt buckle. There is a narrow flat ring on the back that seems to be there to hold the decorative piece in place. It is engraved as though it was intended to be seen also. I would be interested in seeing pictures of yours, front and back, if possible.
Thanks for looking,
BB

I would guess brooch, the fruits, or flowers and beads in the design are feminine and the grill would let the material show through. Watch "Little House on the Prairie" sometime and see if the mother character doesn't have something like that on her shawl, when they take the buckboard into town.

Good idea Dave, a little bit of homework, also fun too. Maybe I have old values, but my family and I like to watch "Little House on the Prairie" once in while as well. Ron

Dave,
Thanks. I don't think I have access to the program, but I will will look for it. I am still in the dark ages without cable or satellite.
