picking up this unit in the morning... Seller claims it says Pulse 8 or 9 on box but does not resemble the Fisher units. Any thoughts??

Well I picked the machine up this morning for a mere $25!! It's a JW Fishers Pulse 8, made in the 80's. I called the company to request the instruction manual as that is the only item not included. It has a rechargeable NiCad battery pack, 8" solid concentric coil, Straight shaft with analog meter, divers rod, hip mounted on belt included. After talking with the service guys at JW Fishers this morning, they told me that if it is working it was an INCREDIBLE find for $25. They claim it to still be a top performer and is actually more sensitive to small objects then the newer model 8X. Parts are no longer available but electronic repairs can be made. They said it will pick up a thumbtack sized object at approx 9-10" coins and such a bit deeper. It has a 100 pulse per second rate.

Anyone have any insight into its use or in fact own one?? I could use some pointers... this is both my first waterproof machine and first PI unit...

Thanks,
Jason

The JW Fishers are primarily diving machines. Modern pulse detectors have moved towards having lower and lower u/s ratings which improves sensitivity to small items such as engagement rings. Unfortunately the more water depth over the coil the higher u/s is needed. This should mean that your detector will lack sensitivity when used on the wet sand or in a few feet of water but will have the edge when used at depth.
Its interesting that they say it is more sensitive than their latest models. This could mean that the latest versions were more optimised towards use at depth and that your older one has a lower u/s which would make it better in shallow water and on the beach though I can't see it matching the new generation machines. At the price though you can hardly go wrong.

They said due to the slower response time from the lower pulse rate you have to reduce your swing speed. They said definitly not a fast sweep machine, but coming from my snail pace swing speed used with my DFX for max depth I should be ok...

let us know how it does..
