Ok - I am wanting to get an extra coil for my x50 - I see there is the 5x10 DD 18.75kHz and also the 10.5 DD 7.5kHz

What are the differences between the two - in what field settings would each one excel? Which one would you pick if primarily hunting coins?

Lastly - were can I get the best deal when I purchase?

thx!

I don't have the 10.5 DD so I can't give you accurate information on that coil.

The HF is meant for low conductors like gold, brass etc, so is very good on nickels. It is also narrow making it good in trash and in fitting between tree roots etc.

18.75kHz is not a frequency noted for being good in disc'ing out iron, but in practical day to day use I find it to do pretty fair, but I think the size & shape helps.

The lower freq DD should do better in rejecting iron and better response on silver/copper, but like I say, I haven't used one.

Hopefully someone else will pop in and help you some more.

Hey bowhunter...there are actually three DD coils for the X-Terra 50 & 70. They are 5"x10" DD 18.75kHz, 10.5" DD 18.75kHz, and 10.5" DD 7.5kHz.

The 5"x10" obviously has the advantage getting into tight spaces, and being lighter.

The 18.75 kHz coils are labeled H for high frequency, and are very sensitive on small and generally lower conductivity targets, such s gold nuggets, small gold jewelry and are more stable in mineralized soil.

The 7.5 kHz coils are labeled M for medium frequency, and are more sensitive to higher conductivity targets, i.e. copper and silver and clad coins.

Obviously, the 10.5" coils will cover more ground quicker.

I have al three in stock. If i can be of further help to you, please don't hesitate to call or email.

I use the 7.5 for coin hunting and the like. I use the 18.75 for volleyball courts and swimming beaches. Like Bill said the 7.5 is supposed to be more for finding higher conductive targets such as dimes, quarters and half dollars and ect. The higher freq is supposed to be better for finding lower conductives targets such as gold rings, gold nuggets or nickels.Hope this helps some.

OK, next question about the 5x10DD. Is it more effective in pattern or prospecting mode when searching for jewelry?

Thanx

According to my STAR X-Terra 70 customer, Cyril Smith, he has "never used a more sensitive to small gold" detector than the X-Terra 70 with the 5" x 10", DD, 18.75kHz coil, running in the Prospecting Mode.

That's good enough for me! For the proof, take a look at his "small gold finds" on the Finds Page of www.treasurehut.org.

1. Are you looking for rings or small gold like chains.
2. Does where you're looking have trash, how much, how thick, and what kind(iron, foil, tabs etc).
3. Do you own a probe that can find really small items, I have a Vibraprobe that is barely up to the task on earring studs.
4. How much time do you have to search an area?
5. How often can you search it?
6. Any others searching it(hunting pressure)?
7. Is the area considered hunted out?
8. What kind of physical condition are you?
9. What's your patience level like?

Prospecting mode can be physically & emotionally demanding in a foil filled world.

See this post of using the HF concentric to get an idea.
