It hasn''t had time to "settle" but the other day I added a clad quarter buried at 7" and laid a nickel sized piece of rotted iron right on top of it. Thats because where I hunt it is extremely trashy.
After a couple rains I tried it out using the stock 950 coil.
C&J mode
After setting the ground and locking it, gain turned to 10, and descrim to 2 I could get the whisper but no vdi or block response. Advanced the gain by 2 gave a quarter signal about 1 of every five sweeps depending on direction. The others were -95 hot rocks with a few -49. At these settings the audio was a bit crackly but useable. Based on Fosters book the results would suggest digging. Depth indicator was spot on.
Relic
Settings same as above. Strong iron probability and occasionally small button or 'large item would show up. Audio signal was better than in CJ. Odds are though with my level of experience with the MXT I would have not dug based on the strong iron and very infrequent good signals. Too, I probably wouldn't have noticed anything unusual in the audio. One thing I did learn was that when running hot gain I could move the trigger back to center and the machine would become noticeably smoother and "good signals" like buckle/button were more common.
So, everything I've read so far says trigger forward in relic but am thinking the smoother running middle position is more desirable. If one hits a signal or multiples, it is a simple matter to flick the trigger forward and descrim against tabs. But all in all I was more comfortable in the CJ mode and I think it gave better and consistant feedback. I'll still play with it as time goes by and see if theres any change.
Even at high gain the 4x6 shooter mostly only gave me the whisper or a hot rock.....and thats good....I think.
When its too hot or cold to be out at least you can experiment and play in the garden.
