Play field Gold

Treasure Mike

New member
Went out after work this afternoon and searched a local school play field. Found a key and about $2 in clad when I got a solid 22 hit on my MXT. Dug down about 2 inches and saw this rusty looking end of a chain. I pulled it out carefully and it kept coming. 24 inches long with the clasp missing. I wiped off the end where the clasp was and I could see 14 K stamped on it. I took it home and soaked it in Tarnex for a few minutes. I then took steel wool and polished it up. It is 24 inches long 7 millimeters wide and weighs 37.3 grams. I found one similar to it that was 5 millimeters wide weighing 16 grams last fall. I had it for weeks before I looked at it closely and saw that it was also 14 K. I thought it was a tarnished silver or bronze chain before I cleaned it. I did not know that gold could look so cruddy after being in the ground for a while. I would have to say that my Mxt has paid for itself many times over during the last 8 months that I have owned it.

Not too sure how much 14K is worth as scrap, but I think that one find just about paid for it again.

At today's spot price of $599.50/troy oz, 37.3 g of 14K gold (58.3% pure) is worth $419.15. Nice find.

Here is a web site that I use to find out the value of any precious metal I find! http://www.dendritics.com/scales/metal-calc.asp I think it is the easiest calculator. Congrats of the gold chain :clapping::wiggle:

Absolutely great find, Mike. That is enough gold to keep a guy smiling for quite a while.

Very glad to see that the chain rang up on your MXT. I have read quite a few posts about other detector models having difficulty detecting bare chains. It seems that a chain must have a charm or amulet attached for many detectors to "see" them.
