Platypus Coil Info

When I received the Platypus coil, I removed the tape, coil cover, and did some work on the bottom of the coil. The coil top shell was sticking up 1/8 to 3/16 beyond the black poured resin. I used a sanding block with 3 5/8 by 5 adhesive backed 80 and 120 sanding paper. After I wet sanded the bottom with 500 grit wet sanding paper for a slick finish. As the pic shows, it is now smooth and level across the bottom. Now it weighs in at 17 oz without coil cover. I do not use the coil cover. To snug up the rod and coil, I removed the Minelab inserts and streched the rubber washers around the inside on the Minelab inserts and positioned them back in the rod. Now, no problem aligning the bolt and it fits nice and tight.

good idea on putting the rubber washers inside the inserts, that can be areal pain trying to get the bolt lined up with them on the outside

they don't take the time to finish the bottom of the coils like the old ones. They just put a coil cover on it. When you take the coil cover off it seems like they left a step out in the final production of the coil. Now after sanding, without a cover it doesn't catch on the uneven surface and glides smoothly. When on gravel I use the cover, on grass I leave it off. IT's 2 onces lighter without the cover.

I had one so bad I had to do about the same thing. There was lip around the coil that was as much as 1/16 inches off and then was about even in some places.I used a knife to get it down then sanded it. I then put a coil cover on it and sealed the cover with black RTV. I had to drill the hole out so the bolt would go through the hole. I called the national distributor to see what could be done before I made the repairs and the rep told me I was mistaken as the coil was not that way. Ha ha, stated to argue with me but was find after I told him I was going to send it back to trade for a more expensive unit. I still had to pay to the ship the unit back and to have the "better" detector sent to me. Once in a while I see the same rep bickering with guys on the forum just as he did with me about their service and "give aways" if you buy a machine from them. I am amazed the are still in business but somehow they seem to go on.
Dirt between the coil and cover will cause some odd noise type problems. I sealed mine with the black RTV and have not had any problems since using that method.
