platinum questions

I have had my platinum for several months now, and have scored quite a few finds, including my first silver Rosie. Lately i have noticed that the unit seems to be going through batteries very quickly and does not seem to be as "steady" when pinpointing targets. I am wondering if I should send the unit in for a tune up and calibration?
Can someone please help me to understand the "notch" function? Any input would be appreciated!

Hi BB, is it cold where you live? some battery's drop fast in cold weather try a hand warmer on your detector with a wool sock around it. Good luck Flintstone

Thanks Flintstone! Yes,it is cold and getting colder. I live west of Chicago and we have been waiting for winter to arrive for weeks now so I have been taking advantage of the unfrozen ground. Been out in the high 40s to mid fifties, is that cold enough affect the battery? Either way I'll give it a try and post how it works out.
