platinum & P.I's

PI's have no problem with platinum...

I have only found 1 platinum but it was a good one ;) 14.6 grams...

I am wondering why you are so interested in the performance of a PI machine with platinum? I found many pt and pt/18 kt gold rings while stationed in Hawaii. Hawaii is a favored vacation spot for Japanese tourist who also like pt and pt/18kt gold rings. Other than the Japanese I am unaware of a concentration of pt rings etc. If you want to keep it to yourself I understand.
At that time I was using the original Garrett Sea Hunter PI model called XL500. I'm unsure how closely the current model of the Garrett pi is similar to the one I used in the1980's. I can tell you that it was very easy to use. It was also loved iron and very small iron. You will read that fresh water tends to have a lot of iron targets and a PI machine might be inadvisable. Best of luck, Mike.

Nice piece, Craig--that's the object of the game! Ya, I've scored a lot of PLAT using PI's specifically because it was too low responding for VLFs (check that one you will be knocked over at how low they come in--even lunkers) and also becasue they are so awesomely dense that they quickly head way down to the hardpan to wait...

I know Briley just found an 18 gram platty with his Excal. I found a platinum wedding band last summer with mine. I think you're probably right about them sinking pretty deep and that makes a convincing argument for a good PI. I do know that a good vlf machine will find them if they are within it's range though.

Why a P.I for Platinum ? some times there is so much black sand and minerals that a vlf won't cut it , sure you dig more iron, but increased depth and sensitivity to metal are the positive trade off, I just wanted (never have found a plat ring) to know if there was a big difference in a plat ring target sound as compared to a similar gold ring. Ding ding- waa-woo-double beep. ect

I will second that Clive, heres a few platinum bands found last year going in behind the South Florida guys using VLFs.

Thanks, I use a Whites Dual Field thanks to a certain Canuck friend of mine who insisted I had to stop scratching the surface and become a pulse hunter.

Not sure why Plat would be different on any machine. Everyone I have found with my GT or excal have blowen my ears off.

Dave

Most detectors will find platinum but a PI is going to find the deepest rings that the Excal or GT won't even hear... Its why I have both the GT and the PI... I have the best of both worlds :)

So to maximize my Platinum finds, I guess the thought here is keep the discrimination on my Excal at minimum and hunt in All Metal if possible?

Dont know yet...waiting for somebody to log in and give us the skinny...does it hit in the iron range? what? since its a ring shape, does it pop off like a ss washer?
C'mon!

Platinum fails into the foil range so its going to be a lowtone...
