platinum jewellery

Any tips on finding platinum with the excallibur? Does it say plat on the ring ,or what ID marks would the ring have if it was platinum? Does platinum turn black like silver? I have a shoe box full of siver rings that I found over the years . I never checked them carefully yet, maybe some might be platinum .

Mike,

Platinum is unmistakable when it's in your hand.

1. Very heavy (more than 24k gold)...specific gravity of nearly 22
2. Will not tarnish greatly...nothing like silver
3. Markings..."PLAT"..."PT"...."850/900/950,999"
4. Is generally silver/grey but will polish to a high lustre

It's in the same ball park as gold....too much DISC will knock out the finer rings (possibly with diamonds), will settle deep like gold.

This ring I found last summer weighs in at 15grams (1/2 an oz).
It came out of the water just as it is.

Initially I thought it was 18k white gold but it was better than that.

Good luck chasing some down,
Tony.

I stopped at a jewellery store the other day to ask about value the guy said platinum is 3.5 times the value of 18 K gold

Certainly got some good info and nope those sterling rings come in high on a meter and platinum low....Hard to say where exactly where one would come in on meter as lots depends on what its mixed with and of course size and weight..Usually platinum comes in extremely low so if thats what your looking for run low disc..and if you find one with diamonds expect a good quality diamond...good luck in your quest...
